I am having a break from my poppyfairy and this is what I am doing. 3 madspaniels sent me the pattern. Sorry I cannot send a photo of what it is supposed to look this as the photo is quite small and would not photo very well.
The last typewriter to be made in the UK came of the production line 2 weeks ago as was donated to a museum in London. How many of us learnt how to tpye on a machine like this?
In a few years time youngsters will be asking WHAT IS THIS?
PS am doing it for my daughter and partner as they love old things!
Yes, brings back memories of the big black typewriter we had. Didn't get a more modern version till high school and electric was only for those few who could afford it. I remember we did have 3 or 4 in my high school typing class and we rotated every class so that everyone had a chance to try one at least one time during the semester. But those old ones were great for typing on mimeograph paper (Anyone remember that????) Oh, and a great job of stitching on a fun design. Can't wait to see it finished.

Oh...I remember my mums typewriter, I was always playing with it as a child!
Interestingly enough we have a charity shop located at the rubbish dump in Rugby where people can donate unwanted items that are too good to throw away. We found a very old typrewriter in there complete with it's wooden storage box and spare unused ribbons for the princely sum of £4!! My 9yr old daughter is now the proud owner of it and she will get it out occasionally to have a play with it much like I did when I was a kid......looks like the appeal of these things never really goes away eh?
Great piece btw....lovely progress

Looks very familiar that is for sure. However the typing skills are a great help on modern keyboards as we can do it in the dark if necessary - and our hands start off on the right keys !!!

I learned to type on a modern computer keyboard ... then I had to go back and use one of those in a business I worked in - NOT FUN and hard work.
Fingers jammed and cramped and it couldn't keep up although I'm assured by those in the know that if I knew how to use it properly it could keep up perfectly well.
A very long time ago in a country far, far away, I learned to type on a machine like this. Personal Typing 1 was for those going to university -- where essays needed to be handed in typed -- and a typical graduation present where I came from was a portable typewriter. From that one semester, and my original speed of 26 words a minute , I have built an entire career, from Kelly Girl summer jobs in Chicago to working with big UK publishing houses. May all typewriters be blessed!
I miss owning a typewriter. The one I grew up with was not in that style, but it was a typewriter all the same. I didn't learn on it as we actually had an atari home computer that I was using at age 3. I think I was 6 before my mom let me use her typewriter.
Anyay, lovely progress on this project. Can't wait to see more of it.

Very neat pattern! I learned on a modern? typewriter in high school, so no ping with the carriage return, just a clunk. Shortly after that I think they got rid of the "keyboarding" class.
That is just like the one my dad used to have and I use to 'play' on. I remember my brother and I used to have these patterns using letters and numbers to type out and if you got it right you would end up with a picture like a silhouette of a face. If you'd told us then (and I'm not even that old) what we would be using now days we would have thought it was fantasy.
I guess people who typed on these had much stronger fingers than people do today. I learned on one of these. Sure wouldn't be able to use one today.
