Tip I found with working on black or navy fabric.
a book light behind the fabric. If you don't have a book light, use a flash light (but put a light piece of fabric over the light to filter it) Just lay the light behind the fabric it will make it easier to see the holes.

Interesting! I'll have to try that when I can kit it all up.

Unfortunately Charles Craft (the main fabby that JoAnn's carries) does not make 18 ct black aida, but they do have it in 14 ct. I am using 18 ct black for my Avengers project and bought my fabric from The Rocking Horse. I got 3 - 15 x 15 pieces of it for around $20 total. Depending on how much of a border you want it should be $10-12 for a piece for your project. Not sure what sorts of deals you can get elsewhere online, but idk how many sites do custom cut pieces of fabric like they do.

I found some 18ct Zweigart on Ebay... but I can't seem to find it regularly stocked anywhere. Is there another fabric anyone would recommend that's easy to work with? I'm rather attached to my Aida, but I'm willing to try something else.

If I go down to a 14ct, the piece grows by another 4 inches in both directions! O.O

tip for working on black fabric simply putting a white fabric on your lap underneath the black fabric. that is only if you are not using a frame.

18 count aida would convert to 36 count in an evenweave, 32 count evenweave would be equal to 16 count aida--finding 36 count in evenweave isn't always easy, but I do know it's at least available in linen--not sure there are other fabrics in 36 count. :coffee:

What's evenweave like to work with? Are the grids easy to find?

The Joanns here did not have black Aida but Michaels did. I don't know id you have a Michaels where you are but they had much more in the way if fabric than Joanns did. I was very surprised. Also check you're local needle point shops in your area. I found several near me where i can get fabric without having to wait. I had no idea....

I'm actually fairly lucky as far as hobby shops go- there's a JoAnn's, Michael's and a Hobby Lobby within 10 miles of me.

I just don't know if I should try an even-weave with zero experience on it before.

try evenweave on a small project first, just to see if you like it--it really is easy to get used to. With some luck, you may be able to find some locally--work on a small piece first and then go from there

So if I was doing a 32ct Evenweave, do I still still stitch every two vertical threads? Would doing it every single thread be very different, just make it smaller?

Well I found 18ct Zweigart black on Ebay and I just ordered the last one they had. Woopee for Ebay right? It'll be crossing the giant big pond sometime in the next week or two.

After shipping it came out to $12.01 which I guess wasn't too bad considering the price was in GBP.

That looks cool. Good luck on black fabric, it would be cool to have the fire popping and looking 3d on black fabric.

Does anyone else find this pic to be scary? I do! I'd definitely leave the eyes for last.

The eyes are really what makes it so complete I think. They just pull it so perfectly together.

Lucky! We are getting a Hobby Lobby near my work in January. I am so excited!

So I got the pattern and I'm pretty happy with it, PDF format, color version, black/white version, symbol list, thread list, and a large chart version in black and white.

The only thing I'm a little disappointed with is that the lengths come in centimeters, so I have a project going on to convert all the lengths and what I don't need. But all in all? I would 4/5 recommend this website.
