LOL well there is a fun activity to do. When you get frustrated at trying to make roses, you just throw the frosting at your husband!

Flower decorations on cakes can look stunning, can't they? Drrubina, do you mean flowers made completely of sugar, or real flowers that have been given a sugar coating, like they sometimes do with violets?

She also made my grooms cake when i got married, i'll have to find a picture of it when i get home later and post it. I wanted to make my wedding cake, but i simply did not have enough time, but its a good thing, my cake came out beautiful by the decorators i hired.
 $100??? I think the kits for the classes usually run about $25 (half that if you use a Michael's or Joann's coupon) and the classes are usually $25. I know there were a couple of other small items we bought, but I know we didn't spend that much for the materials at the beginning! Of course, we bought 2 of all tips we used so we could each have a set.

My mom and I did my wedding cake. People thought I was nuts, but it was actually relaxing to me.

I only make flowers out of buttercream icing (or royal :x if I don't have time for them to dry). I wouldn't mind figuring out on my own how to make rolled fondant/buttercream flowers (mainly roses), but I just don't have the time to play and we don't have a lot of requests for flowers that I can't do out of icing.

Yeah, we spent around 100 dollars, 50 for the kit for both of us, and another 50 on various other things we didnt NEED to buy but we did, like additional cool tips, dyes, etc. Here is the grooms cake we did, i thought my mom did more decorating than she did, guess not. lol

My mom and I took lessons when I was in 6th grade. It was a 4 week course, 2 hours per week. We also took the second course later that year. I was 11/12 years old. It's interesting because my mom and I have our own specialties even though we learned together. She enjoys baking the cake and doing the icing while my specialties include roses (can make ones small enough to sit on a penny) and writing. It's hard to believe that we've been doing it for about 18 years now. I also have a computer printer that is just for edible images--uses a special paper that is edible (similar to rice paper) and edible ink--to put pictures on top of cakes.

It really isn't difficult to learn the basics. When I was in college, I took a graduate level class where we had to teach a small part of our class something. I ended up taking in cupcakes and icing. Everyone in my group was older than me and currently teachers, but everyone wanted to be in the group to learn to decorate...even my instructor!

I can understand that, I'd love to learn it as well. Don't suppose I ever will now though, but I really admire the talent of those who can do it!

So THAT'S how they put photographs on cakes! I've always wondered about that.

And you don't do this as a business...why??? You're so talented! :king:

All of the cakes in your first post are beautiful (I can appreciate the time it must have taken you to do the baby blanket basketweave).

Thank you for sharing these with us! :applesauce:

Thanks for the compliment. The basketweave baby blanket was interesting to do. I was in a time crunch since I had to work that night. I had a terrible time getting the right color for the baby so that took a good deal of my time. I love to do basketweave on the sides of cakes, but I think this was the quickest basketweave I've ever done. The blanket was the only way I could get all of the colors they wanted in--baby blue, royal blue, lime green  , and orange. I cheated on the eyes--instead of piping open eyes, I used our icing coloring with a toothpick to draw on closed eyes. I also cheated with the mouth. I didn't want to pipe one on so I used a lifesaver candy with a pez candy stuck in it to make the paci.

As for why we don't have a business, it's just not feasible right now. Even though we've been doing this for 18 years or so now, there would be too much to do and too much cost. In our state, you can't run any type of cooking business out of your home. You have to have a commercial kitchen that is inspected by the health department. Mom and I have started talking about it more and more lately, but I don't know if we'd ever do it. DH and I don't have the money. Of course, that doesn't stop DH from pointing out different store fronts that we could use. Until that day, we'll just enjoy doing cakes for family and friends. We have become known as the cake lady since people say it is unusual to have a cake that looks beautiful and tastes great like ours.
