Cake Decorating *pics added 5/17*

Post by Busy_B »

I've been cake decorating for about 18 years now. Here's a few that I've done in the last few months for friends/family/co-workers. We don't have a business, just for fun.

It all depends on the cake. Most of these didn't take that long. The baby one with the blanket took the longest because of doing a basketweave (fake) technique to make it look woven. If you don't include baking/cooling/icing, it usually takes about an hour or so to do the decorating if my kids don't interrupt too much.

Sorry, no. I only had 2 days notice on this cake, I think. It would have made it a little easier, but I just didn't have time.

Those are wonderful. I am going to show my daughter as she loves cake decorating and is in school for Bakery and Pastries. Her externship is going to be at a Cake Decorating Business.

Wow, what a good job! I would love to be able to do something like that! Someone got me a cake decorating tool kit for Christmas last year-I've tried a few things. But I still need a lot of practice and ideas!

Where did you learn to do this so well? CarolinaGirl

These are wonderful - tha baby blanket must have taken ages to do. I used to do cake decorating years ago, but haven't had time (I think the last one I did was for my daughter's first birthday - she's nearly 17 now!!). I must see if I can find any old photographs.

It just takes a lot of practice. The important thing is to have fun with it! Don't expect to be good at all of it. My mom enjoys the baking and icing part--she is a lot quicker with icing a cake and smoothing it (with paper towels) than I am. On the other hand, I am the flower person, idea person, and writing person. I can usually come up with several ideas pretty quickly. For instance, on the baby blanket one, I was in a rush and didn't want to draw on the baby's mouth since I'd have to make another color. So, I took a LifeSaver candy with a Pez candy trimmed down to fit into the lifesaver hole to make the paci.

As for how I learned, my mom and I went to a local cake supply store when I was 12 to take lessons. We lived with my mom's parents my entire life, and my grandfather was in and out of the hospital a lot. The 4 week class for the first course was a good way to keep me away from the hospital all the time. We took a few more courses after that, and I ended up working in the store through high school and a couple of years of college. (They only taught classes and sold supplies, we didn't sell cakes.) The rest of it has all been practice.

I know that the craft store in town offers a Wilton Cake decorating class, I have been wanting to take it but I really didn't want to take it by myself......but I guess I will have to if I want to learn! I think the Wilton is a 3 part series.

I love to watch FoodTV when they show the cake challenges! Those people are so talented!

I watch them, too, but don't do cakes like that. My mom and I really don't like dealing with rolled fondant. It's a major pain at times and doesn't taste very good. If we have to use it, we use a recipe for rolled buttercream. Plus, I NEVER stack a cake before delivery. That's just nuts!! Wilton is a 3 part series (3 courses for 4 weeks, one night/week) usually. We took 1 & 2. Course 3 is tiered cakes and more speciality things. It's a lot of fun, and my mom's coworkers liked it because she took her practice cake into work each week. We didn't need a cake a week around the house. :cake:

I highly recommend taking the wilton cake decorating classes (most Michaels stores offer them). I took classes 1 & 2 (beginner and intermediate) and it was very very fun... expensive but fun. To buy all the bells and whistles to make things easier on you will run easily just over 100 dollars, but since I took the class with my mother, we shared a lot of the more expensive things that we could.

She also made my grooms cake when i got married, i'll have to find a picture of it when i get home later and post it. I wanted to make my wedding cake, but i simply did not have enough time, but its a good thing, my cake came out beautiful by the decorators i hired.
