Help needed. What size fabric?

Post by felicity53 »

After much debating I have decided to re-start one of my many WIPs. The Desiderata Sampler by Indigo Rose. The fabric I originally started it on was quite a loose weave and as there is much "writing" it was getting lost.
The problem I'm having is working out how much fabric I need. The work is 495 stitches high and 166 stitches wide. I'd like to do it on even weave.
Can some kind and clever person out there help me?
Please.

All depends on what count fabric you are intending to use.

14 ct would require appr. 41 inches by 18 inches which includes a 3 inch border on all sides
16 ct would require appr. 37 inches by 16 inches
18 ct would require appr. 33 1/2 inches by 16 inches
22 ct would require appr. 28 1/2 inches by 13 12 inches

Hope this helps--and if you are using a different count, let us know and someone will get the info---all above fabric sizes include a 3 inch border on all sides

If you're using Evenweave..then 28 count and 32 count will take the same size fabric as 14 & 16 Aida.

One big piece you're doing! :D

Unless the 32ct is 1 over 1 full cross or 2 over 1 tent stitch, in which case it'll be 11" wide x 21.5" high

The way to work out the fabric size is:

Inches:
Size = Number of stitches divided by stitch count in stitches per inch + 6"

Centimetres
Size = (Number of stitches * 2.54) /stitch count in stitches per inch + 15.

Do this calculation for both height & width. If you can't do it in your head (& who can?) & have no calculator, well, all smart phone, PC's, Mac's and tablets have calculator programs on them.

Regards,

Richard.

 Hello Rolo and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! Take a look at Cairee's post a few posts up from this one and you will see a link to the cross stitch calculator. It is a life saver when it comes to figuring out how much fabric you will need and how big a project will be.
I hope that this works for you and that you will stay with us and show us your project.

Welcome to the forum! :)

The fabric calculator will definitely help you. Aside from that, start with the number of stitches per side, not the finished size.

If the current design is supposed to be 16 x 20 on 18 count, that means the stitch size is probably 288 x 360.

You want to do the design on 14 count, so divide the stitch size by the fabric count so 288 / 14 = 20.5 and 360 / 14 = 25.7

The finished size of that design on 14 count will be 20.5 inches x 25.7 inches. Add your margin allowance -- probably 3 inches per side -- so add 6 inches to each dimension to get your fabric size. 20.5 + 6 = 26.5 and 25.7 + 6 = 31.7

You want a piece of fabric at least 26.5 inches x 31.7 inches.

If the fabric comes 55 inches wide, you'll want a fat-half yard (36 x 27.5 inches)
