My Bookshelf Bingo - BINGO!

Re: My Bookshelf Bingo - numbers posted daily
I get the feeling this is going to be a close game. Remember, the first person to email me with a valid Bingo is the winner. Here are today's numbers:
18. The Once & Future King, T. H. White
This is the story of King Arthur - who doesn't love stories about kings and knights and power and deceit? I've always loved King Arthur stories, and this is surely my favorite, followed closely by Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. (Should I also mention that Camelot is one of my favorite musicals?)
26. Ben Franklin, Walter Isaacson
I'm reading this one now and so far I'm really enjoying it. (I usually have at least books going at a time - much like my stitching. ha) I'm still in the early years of Franklin's life but he really was a unique man. He made some poor life choices, wasn't always the best person he could be, and sometimes trusted the wrong people, but he continued to grow and learn and find his way in life...with obviously quite a successful outcome. (Did you know he loved to swim and crafted swim fins and hand paddles so he could swim faster? Yeah, I didn't either.)

Hadn't been able to check for a few days. Good thing too because the days I missed, I didn't have one book picked. Today, King Arthur and Merlin moved me to being half there! 5/10!

Re: My Bookshelf Bingo - 2 October
9. Holy Bible
I really can't add anything to that.
15. Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy
I've seen the movie and I'm determined to get through this book. It can be hard to buy a book that has been translated into your own language because the quality of the translation can make or break the story. In this case, I read Amazon reviews on the various translations and went with the one that had the best, and most useful, reviews. And one final note - Russian writers like to use a lot of characters in their novels!!

Re: My Bookshelf Bingo - numbers posted daily
Clearly I should check in more often; I am now 7/10. Loved Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Author Jamie Ford did an excellent job capturing the emotions of the time. Having been close friends with a Japanese family for decades I was proud to see the day when the Canadian government made a public apology to the Japanese as well as offer compensation for property confiscated during the war. I saw my friend's parents live out gracious forgiveness in the country that first interned them and then conscripted them to build the Trans Canada highway. Their children never knew bitterness from their parents and are proud, responsible Canadians raising children of their own now. The parents themselves took their very first overseas trip - to Hawaii - with the money received as compensation. All interesting memories that flooded back with an excellent read.

Wow, you're getting close, Linda!
I don't know anyone personally who went through the internment camps, but I studied Japanese history in college and learned quite a bit about that sad time. Have you read Farewell to Manzanar? Another good read. Years ago I went to what's left of Manzanar and tried to picture what it was like when it was "home" to so many Japanese Americans. Sad...but I'm glad it's there so we don't forget.

Re: My Bookshelf Bingo - 3 October
Here are today's numbers - good luck everyone.
13. Harry Potter
Of course!!
24. Dog On It, Spencer Quinn
Quinn's written several books about the adventures of Chet (the K9 hero) and Bernie (his human, a private investigator) and they really are fun and quick reads. This is the first and it's the one that got me hooked on the others. Bernie is a likeable guy, but Chet is usually the smart one. (I bet that sounds like some animal/human relationships you all know, right?)

Re: My Bookshelf Bingo - numbers posted daily
I have 2 more to go!
8/10 for me so far.
I didn't realize I was supposed to post here, but I've read all of the books I picked.
I absolutely LOVE Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Narnia. I can read them over and over and never get bored.

Yay!! for Harry Potter. 6/10 for me now. I listened to Dog On It and enjoyed it but, if I remember correctly, not the narrator. Sticking to Cat Mysteries. Hmmmmm, that would be a good topic for a Bingo, if I ever win won again. Good luck to all of you who are getting very close!

Some of you are getting very close - good luck to everyone.
6. Centennial, James Michener
In typical Michener fashion, this is a very detailed historical novel about Colorado, the Centennial State (we became a state in 1876). It's long (again, typical Michener), but a good read. I had read it years ago and reread it when I moved to Colorado. I also have the Centennial miniseries on DVD - might be good for some stitching days.
14. The Octopus, Frank Norris
It's sometimes dry, but it tells the story of the "war" between California wheat farmers and the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880. This satisfies the history nerd in me - that nerdiness should be pretty evident in this list of books. So, how many of you thought you were picking a book about a real octopus?

none for me today. I didn't want to pick a Michener book. I'm not really a fan of his, they're way too long and too descriptive for me.
I read for fun, and to transport me into a different world. I get enough drama in real life. Reading is a nice escape.

They do require a bit of dedication and determination.StitchinWitch wrote:none for me today. I didn't want to pick a Michener book. I'm not really a fan of his, they're way too long and too descriptive for me.
I agree. Even the history books I read are an escape.StitchinWitch wrote:
