New Gridding

i decided to try new gridding and its brilliant
i am using 4 lb. weight red monofillament fishing line red
its fine enough on the 22 count and easy to stitch over and remove
with it being palstic it doesnt get snagged like cotton thread and its stong enough to pull out
doesnt weep onto fabric and a lot cheaper than easy guide line
this spool cost me like Â£3.00 and it will last a long time

Thanks for the photo Skitzzz, I tried it a while ago, or similar, and I couldnt get on with it, but I think I was trying to do lines instead of crosses at the intersections as you have done. Next time I stitch on evenweave I'll give it another go

Did you do each cross at once or in lines across the piece of fabric?

Did you just use lengths of wire or is it one length?

Sorry just curious as about to try the stuff myself

I grabbed a spool of fishing line from my dad last year- couldn't really get on with it. I had a hard time just threading my needle. But now I am wondering if it was too thick and I should see if he has a finer spool- I just grabbed some leftover line.
I am convinced that the spools of red gridding thread is just re-packaged fishing line.. with a price increase of course

I might try something like this at some point, but I kinda like the full lines of the washable pens, and the fact I don't have to remove lines later. It's working for me so for now I'll stick with it, but I do like the idea and I do have fishing line around the house.

I tried something like this last week. I gridded the piece, but when it filled with confetti, I couldn't see the lines any more. The day before I had bought beads with some tread . So I used the tread for the gridding. I really liked it

i like the idea! for me I like being able to make the full square using washable pens.but I have yet to find a good pen that doesn't bleed

this is so fine its 4 lb weight so it was easy to thread even in small eye
i just cut lengths of line then did 4 under 6 over( repeat) so it made the cross
it took a couple of days to do but now stitching over it i will not go back to a pen or pencil plus you can get different colours in it
and even now i haven't lost my place so i just thought i would pass it on

It is always good to have many suggestion as to what works for each different person.You never know who you might be helping without even realizing it. Glad you found a good solution that works for you.

As I am not around any one that fishes I did not realize that fish line came in any color other then clear.....

I grid with the washable pen but have had real problems with it running on 28 ct fabric and I would like to try that count so I could see if tent stitching some of my HAEDs on that count would give me better coverage. But I have to be able to grid for those so I may try this out and see how it works. If it does work for me, you will have helped me solve a problem. I'm bookmarking this thread because its going to be a little while. Others use this I know, but the close up really helps. Thanks,

What an excellent idea! Pen is useful, but I don't generally want to wash my pieces once I'm finished... if I could just gently pull out the fishing line... and presumably it's reuseable?

The stuff I got is like a silvery colour as the coloured stuff was costly in comparison.

It's easy enough to grid with but think for my HAEDs I will stick with my pencil which I think is a bit more suited to gridding as I go.

I used fishing line for years but now I use beading thread. The large spools are quite inexpensive here.

I've never tried gridding, but would like to. My only concern is in using the fishing line. Does it tangle in with the stitching and distort the work when it was being removed?

no it doesn't distort the stitching and it doesnt tangle with the threads because this is like plastic and its so fine because its 4 ilb weight plus its easy to pull out i took a while to do but i wish i had found this before pens and pencils its so much neater

Thanks for posting this up! I bought this same type of fishing line and was about to give it a try. I've been using a clover blue marking pen to grid but since it takes me a long time to finish I worry about the lines not fully washing out. I figure the fishing line will help a lot!

I previously marked a page ending using 8lb fishing line and found it just a bit to bulky. The 4lb should be much better!
