Adelai Niska
Zoe Washburn
Badger

Adelai Niska is the baddest of the bad, equivalent to the most evil of mob bosses. Versed in the writings of Sun Tzu, he educates his favourite torture victims with 'wisdom'. He runs a crime ring that even semi-respectable sorts, like the crew of Serenity, hesitate to get involved with. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens. Two episodes, 'The Train Job' and 'War Stories', feature Niska.

Zoe Washburn served with Mal during the war, and has been his companion ever since. She is married to the pilot (Wash), but has a close bond with the captain that sometimes causes a bit of trouble in her marriage. She serves mainly as muscle on the crew of Serenity, picking up the duty of captain when needed as well. Wash calls her his 'warrior woman', and she's definitely someone you want on your side.

Badger is another 'baddie', but not evil like Mr Niska. Badger is introduced in the pilot episode, sitting behind a desk and peeling an apple with an archaic apple-peeler. He runs a smuggling ring from the planet Persephone, where the crew of Serenity ends up picking up a few passengers to compensate for what Badger refuses to pay them for a botched job.

River Tam
Ice Planet
Browncoat

River Tam is Dr Simon Tam's sister. While both are incredibly brilliant, Simon readily admits that, "..my little sister makes me look like an idiot child." Her brilliance and talent of both mind and body gain the notice of a new 'special' school for gifted children, and that's where her trouble starts. We are introduced to River in the pilot episode, where she and Simon are taken on as passengers (although River is in a box). Little did the crew of Serenity know that River had just been rescued by her brother.

In 'The Message', the episode begins where the crew is taking a little recreation time while checking for mail and messages. The Ice Planet is a whimsical treat, and consists of a large frozen ball of flavoured ice suspended from a string on a stick. River and Shepherd Booke are seen enjoying them, though River is still trying to figure out the knack of eating hers, and is heard to say, "My food is problematic."

'Browncoat' is a term applied to those who opposed the Alliance in the Unification War. Even though the Browncoats lost, there is still great honor in being a Browncoat... as long as you're quiet about it (sorta), unless it's Unification Day and you're in a bar on a planet full of those who support the Alliance...

The Lassiter
Kaylee Frye
Serenity

The Lassiter is a prized antique weapon, the last-of-its-kind hand-held laser pistol from Earth-that-was. Priceless, truly. In the episode titled 'Trash', Saffron makes a return to the show to entice Mal and his crew on a job to steal the priceless antique.

Kaylee Frye is the ship's mechanic and provides a bright n' shiny component as part of the crew. Her eye is turned by useful parts found in junkyards for the ship rather than clothes and shoes (unless it's a REALLY frilly dress...), and she's often seen in mechanic's coveralls with a smudge of grease on her face.

Serenity is the name of the Firefly-class ship captained by Malcolm Reynolds and his crew. Named for the Battle of Serenity in the Unification War, she don't look like much, but she'll surprise you. During the short run of the show, she's nearly stolen at least twice, chased by Alliance cruisers, nearly blown to bits, and in the movie, painted up to look like a Reaver ship. She's boarded by thieves, Alliance captains and soldiers, a mob boss, 'secret' agents, and a bounty hunter. Despite all that, she runs great (most of the time), and has a homey feel. She is, in fact, home.
