Often the tapestry needles we use have too big an eye for beads. Try a size 26 needle it might work but I usually use fine embroidery needles with small eyes or a special beading needle which can be bought from most habberdashery stands/ embroidery shops.

I use a beadalon needle - it has an eye in the centre and is pointed at both ends and it'll go through anything =}

I'm doing beads now on my Summer Fairy from Joan Elliott, and I absolutly hate it. I used those long flexible beading needles, and believe me, with a thumb that only does half of the job it's not easy.

Are there small beading needles aswell, the size of a normal embroidery needle?

I struggled for a long time to attach beads because I have nickel allergy and I couldn't find gold beading needles. I even had some plated but it soon wore off. Eventually I found that a size 28 cross stitch needle will accomodate most seed beads. You get the occasional one that has too small a hole. I also find that some brands of needle have a smaller eye than others.

a 28 needle is OK for most seed beads, although some simply won't fit over the eye. As others have said, traditional beading needles are a pain because they are too long, but there are shorter ones, sometimes they are simply called "beading needles (short)" or something like that, but it's also worth Googling "bead embroidery needles", which is what some sites call them.
