Re: Pixel art
The charts are special ones for pixel art only so unfortunately he can't use my cross stitch charts.
Each base plate is 5 x 4". The dragon and warrior kit was 30 baseplates, the first tiger was 48, the gorilla was 8 so they are all different sizes. James prefers the larger ones as they are more realistic because you get more detail.
At the end you stick all the baseplates together on a sticky foam board like a jigsaw to make up the picture.

Aww, poor guy, he'll never know the joy of miscalculating the amount of fabric needed. Seriously, I'm jealous!vanessanjf wrote: At the end you stick all the baseplates together on a sticky foam board like a jigsaw to make up the picture.

Re: Pixel art
Does anyone else remember this, or did it never make it outside Germany and the Netherlands?
It didn't have quite so many colours, so I don't think they'd be as lifelike as these pixel-art pictures, but they were great fun to do, and I remember a rather stunning Tutanchamun my cousin did. And I used one or two of the charts for stitching, too !

This is amazing
Perhaps he could also start up his own forum, there must be other people out there who do this craft, after all someone has to start a forum. It would be interesting to see if other people joined

Re: Pixel art
This is the website for Pixel Art if you wish to learn more about it. I have seen it demonstrated several times at craft fairs, but James's pictures are far more impressive!!

Re: Pixel art
This reminds me of the mosaic art I did years ago where you stuck tiles on something to make a picture following a pattern. I don't remember any details as it was so long ago but they were nowhere near as detailled or lovely as these are.

Re: Pixel art
I was just showing all these to my hubby and not only did he say it was "really cool!" (which it is!), but he's expressed an interest in perhaps giving it a try himself! I am just about jumping over the moon with elation that we might enjoy doing something similar - he could do pixel art while I'm stitching. He's going to have a look at the online catalogue and see if any of the kits take his fancy. I've advised him to try a small one first to see if he enjoys doing it though...

Re: Pixel art
That is brilliant Kell. Me and James do our pictures together every night. It really does make it more enjoyable when you have someone to share your hobby with. Then we love going to the shows beacuse the pixel art people go too and we both have something to look at. We are going to Olympia tomorrow. Can't wait!

Re: Pixel art
I dare to stomp here and say out loud this much: that comparison idea is perfect! He should give it a shot one day! And those tigers and that wedding picture...Aahhhh! I could never stitch anything like that, no matter how stamped Penelope canvas I'd have!

Re: Pixel art
This is incredible!! WOW!!! I love beeds, and have made "beed-mats" if you wanna put it that way, where i design my own thing. Don't know if the technique actually exists and have a name? discovered it when i was playing around as a child. It's round beeds, thread together in a sort of diamond structure. Sometimes write words or make pictures. But nothing compared to this!!! This is just magnificent!!!
I think it use to be something similar as a kid, had these plastic grids with little spikes and special plastic like beeds that you place on the grid and then afterwards you iron over it and they sort of "melt" just enough to stick to each other so that they can be removed from the grid, (beads are still identify-able, not meshy) creates a picture of "beads".
Is this something similar?? what are the base plates? How are the beeds attached? does he work beads on with needle and thread? stick them permanently with glue?? I'm very interested!!!

Re: Pixel art
The plastic basplates all have little pegs that the beads slot onto and hold onto. You don't take them off the baseplate they just stay on. You put all the baseplates together to make up the picture.
