I hate to sound obvious, but you could measure it ?
Take a ruler, place it along a line of holes in the fabric, and count the number of holes in one inch -- that should give you the approximate count (approximate because really you should count the threads as the stitches are made over the threads, but personally I find the holes easier to count, especially if I go along the line with a needle poking each hole in turn while counting)

don't feel bad for sounding obvious...told yall the newbie in me would poke through every once in a while... Thanks for the knock on the head!
I would think that the material is 14 count aida but I am not sure. Some where on the direction page it should tell you. If not then Mabel has the best idea measure and count.

I really like this little bird. I can think of several people who would like something like this. As for how many projects I work on, it's usually only one. If we are in the time of year where we're doing a lot of driving, I might have a small one to take in the van. Right now I have my one at home and a smaller pattern for a trivet to take on long trips.

I guess I look at backstitching in a different way. I love the process of doing it because it makes the stitching POP.
Oh I hope you can get the pictures of fabric up for us to look with you.
Isn't it great to have everyone to chat and share and discuss things with ...I love it!

all righty....here is a contact sheet of what each one of the fabrics look like with the bird...I know they are small...but they give some kind of an idea...I was going for the same as the pictures background but I'm really liking the blues as well....ughhh I'm almost afraid to do this one by my guess...while you're looking at these to give me an opinion...do you think I ought to show my mother and let her choose one??? Just wondered...I'm leaning toward 2nd row third one in...
so opinions please!!! and if you want to see it a bit bigger just click it...
Gosh, what a choice! I think the one you mentioned looks great, but I also like the greeny ones like Everglade and the last one in the third row as they contrast more with the bird's plumage. The very dark blue (and the other darker ones) rather overwhelms the bird, I think, and the ones with a hint of pink or lilac seem to have a bit of an argument with all the orange shades in the bird. I think personally I'd go for Everglade, but it's such a personal thing -- asking your mum might not be a bad idea at all!
I like the two first ones in the first two rows and the everglade Mabel mentioned but also the lovely darker green in the shadowbrook row ... infact thats my favourite.
I do like the blues, but I think they over shadow the bird's beauty colourwise ...
Yup, the darker green gets my vote!

I really like the blue but I also think it takes something away from the birds colors. I personally like the very first one and the last one in the third row. They seem to have the colors most like the picture that was posted. I like the Everglade color but it looks to washed out for this picture.
It is a very personal choice but since you are trying to surprise your mom I would choose the color and keep it a secret. But then I like giving secret gifts for the add oh's and ah's.

See how different we all are. I like the Desert Sky one the best - it's the lightest colour (on my screen, at least) and the birdie stands out more.

I came back for another look this morning and I still like the darker green background and I also like the very first one on the first row.
So I'm down to two now.

Hello....I spent a long time looking at all the samples...well, for me...I like the very first one the most! ...looks greenery with some brown shades....gives a very natural background setting for the cute mad bird.
Goodluck on this! Take care!

I like the last one in the third row
When I ordered some dyed fabric, the lady told me that Aida is usually a stronger colour than evenweave, this may be worth confirming with the company you order with, I got mine off Polstitches, she was amazing, phoned me to discuss my order a few minutes after I ordered online
Ohhhh thank you all!!! I actually think I'm gonna go with the first one or the first one in the second row...Not only does it make the bird pop but I think it would be easier to place the picture in someones home as those two have some neutrals in them! Thanks again for all the opinions now all I have to do is wait till pay day!
I like the first one in the first row and the last one in the third row. I have to agree with you that the first one does look more like a natural setting for the bird and would be easier to fit in with a decor. Good luck!
