Post by wendywombat »

Serinde and I are starting a SAL for a Hardanger Sampler designed by Mary Hickmott of (late lamented) New Stitches fame. :D

http://www.stitchdirect.com/index.php/nh20150040.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank
The plan is to start this on the 1st November and as there are several girls here who love Hardanger we wondered if anyone else would like to join in. The start date is posted in advance to allow anyone to get the Stash/Chart/Kit from the above link.

We can use this thread for names of those interested and to post photos.

What do you think?

Great stuff! Mary Hickmott's instructions and charts I find to be very clear, and there's no reason not to enjoy. :D

I'm going to do this in very traditional style: either white on white or ecru on white. :thinks:

Anyway, it'll get y'all refreshed for Mabel's SAL... :tizzy:

EDIT: Or maybe not... I realised that I have Sam's lovely "Dune" 28ct Lugana and it looks very well with DMC 842...

Me too. I haven't done any Hardanger this year and I am so tempted. Is this a chart which is mailed or is it a pdf? Is this the only site that has that pattern? Nov 1 is far enough away that it seems reasonable to me and I am aching for a new start (even though I still have my Plum Pudding and of course all my HAEDs and Mabel's SAL coming up) and this would be perfect. I think I have fabric that would be good for it but will have to check. I've never done any Mary Hickmott designs but have seen some that y'all have posted and want to try.

I'm pretty sure you can only get this at StitchDirect, but it comes as either a chart only or the kit. Her designs are good for Intermediate hardangeristas, and her charts and stitch explanations very clear, I think.

Very tempting and if I am near the end of Angel it would be ideal to have with me when I am house sitting in January.
Thanks for the link I will sleep on it for a day or so and then decide. Knowing me the minute I see someone posting their first completed square I will want to join in. mmmmmmm some thinking to do for sure. :thinks:

Would someone who had stitched Mabel's. SAL and some of her other patterns ( like me) qualify as an Intermediate hadangerista?

Wish I could take the credit, but Serinde coined it. I love it too. Even if I misspelled it

I think if you have done some of Mabels patterns you can do any hardanger, especially if you have done the SAL, as that covered almost every hardanger technique I've ever found

Carole, you won't have any problems at all with this design.

Mary Hickmott's designs and her instructions are very clear. It's the combination of stitches that make this Sampler so interesting. It's quite large but each element can be done quite quickly. The frame work, once done makes the placing of the individual motifs simple.
If you can manage Mabel's beautiful and quite complex SotW then you can do this!

Viva Hardangeristas!...

Oh I would have loved to have joined in with this, but I must keep myself available for Mabel's SAL and I've got my eye on an Elizabeth Almond SAL too. Haven't had a lot of time for stitching or foruming this year as mum hasn't been well so I have been a bit busy.

I will enjoy watching you all and may have a go at this next year.

That SAL at Blackwork Journeys looks wonderful, too. Does this means I'll be doing three SALs this year???

Just ordered the chart so I guess I'd best go check out my fabrics and threads. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Carole
:tizzy:

eta: Is there somewhere that I can find out what size the fabric needs to be. I have a lot of fabrics that I purchased when my LNS went out of business and would like to use one of them if at all possible. If I know the count then I can figure out the size for whatever fabric I decide on. I have no idea what color fabric (also tempted to try one of Sam's beautiful fabrics) or threads. I am sure I will end up with a variegated thread somewhere in there since I love love variegated threads. So much fun :whoop:

I have my chart here.

Finished size 11.6 x 18.9 ins. ( 29.5 cms x 48cms)

Materials needed:

22 count Hardanger fabric (white or Antique white...or what you wish!)
size of fabric needed 27 ins x 20 ins (68.6 cms x50.8 cms)
Four skeins #5 pearl white ( the pattern says Anchor but I guess DMC is the same)
2 balls # 8 pearl white ( again Anchor thread but DMC does it in balls too)

Tapestry needles 24 and 26

Thank you! Now I need to decide on what fabric and size. But I should be able to figure it out. Don't know how long it will take the chart to get here. Though I sometimes get packages from the UK faster than from across town

I am having 3rd and 4th thoughts about this lovely sampler. I may still get the chart but won't join in the SAL which is sad but I have a deadline - with only a little bit of leeway for Angel. The last time I had time to do any stitching on her was last Saturday and it will only be a couple of hours this afternoon now, which is highly unusual for me. Also I am away to Perth - across the other side of the country for a week and won't be taking her with me either. The house is too dark as like many Aussie houses, it has a very wide surfeit (roof overhang) which keeps the house cooler in the summer but not helpful for stitching.

I am looking forward to watching you all stitch it though and I am sure that your colour schemes will be fabulous.
