Pixel art

Post by vanessanjf »

My friend James does a hobby called pixel art which is lots of little square beads you put on baseplates to create amazing pictures. Is it really good as we have a hobby that we can do together, whilst I am doing my cross stitch he makes these pictures:

He has done loads of others and he is going to do me one of Aerosmith's lead singer Steven Tyler next :D
Hope you like them as he doesn't get to show his work to many people because there isn't a forum like this one for him.

Wow, that's gorgeous! It's very similar to cross stitch with the whole "pixel" link (I often think of my stitching as pixel art, too) but I love the beads and bright colors!

Tell James his work is fantastic. :D

They are amazing Vanessa. How does James place the beads, does he use tweezers or a special tool? and is the picture pre printed on the base plate, to follow? They are all so beautifully done.Thank you for sharing them, and :applesauce: :applesauce: to James.

It looks great! reminds me of a toy I had in my childhood, called MiniSteck (I think it was a German thing); same sort of idea except some of the pieces consisted of more than one little square.

How wonderful that you practically share a hobby, except that he uses beads and you use needle & thread!

Yes he uses tweezers. The pattern is printed on a paper chart and he places the base plate over the chart. Each symbol represents a different colour a bit like cross stitch. He is all happy now with your lovely comments :D

Wow! That is amazing! He should join our forum and be an honorary member :) That way he can display his pixel art!

Wow! Love it! You should try both working on the same design - him in beads and you in floss - and then display your two pieces together for comparison! :)

They are a lot quicker than cross stitch. The ones with 2 tigers in took him about 1 month.
Here is his latest finish. I have a programme on my computer to make your own pictures so he downloads pictures he likes off the internet to make. This is one of them. It took him around 2 months. I wish i could finish my cross stitch as fast!!

I've seen this advertised in some of the cross stitch magazines - I wondered what it would be like - it's much better than I had thought, seeing these now. Your friend could join here and set up a gallery - and his own SALs!! Tell him not to be shy :D :D

James does wonderful work! I've seen these advertised in catalogs, but they don't look as beautiful as these designs do. They look very large- how big are the finished pieces?
