So was I when I saw it and went into town and bought it, I can kind of crochet but never quite managed to do it properly! I hope that this might help me sort out the bits that I never did get! I haven't watched the DVD yet but the magazine looks quite interesting. Maybe we can keep this going with our test pieces and what ever we make?
Good Luck to all who try.

Good luck in your attempts to learn crochet. It is a wonderful hobby and has so much variety. I have used various thickness of wool and many types of crochet thread as well. Several of us on the forum do crochet - don't we Rose?

Man I could use that!!! I tried learning to crochet, but I couldn't grasp it.. my mother couldn't really help me out as I'm left handed and I just could switch it around for some reason. I keep meaning to youtube it... I've learned so much from the tutorials people have there

I saw that advert too and shall look it out. I do do crochet but as I am self-taught, I do it rather cack-handedly in that I hold both the yarn and hook in my right hand! Maybe this magazine will sort me out!

Twinklehubby works in a newsagents and he brought me a copy home! :D
I've never tried it before but i think i'm getting the hang of the "double crochet"
I was really confused this morning as to why it was all curling up, and then i saw a bit in the guide telling you to check that you've still got 20 "v's" on the top row - i'd got 12!! oops!
anyhoo, think i'm ok now - good job it's only a practice piece!

and the good thing is i can just about manage to do it while i'm feeding Nico! (i'm BFing)
unfortunately cross stitch is impossible while i'm feeding him - awwww, if i could do both it would be ACE! i'd get SO much done!! :D

so hopefully i'll be able to get the hang of this so I won't be so BORED!

These kind of things only seem to be in the shops for about the first dozen issues, after that, if you haven't subscribed or ordered it specifically from your newsagent you're stuffed. I used to get a calligraphy one.

this is true, but as i'm sure you can understand, there is only limited space in stores and with new items coming in all the while, and various dumpbins around the shop displaying offer items, there is no way stores can stock every issue of all the various partworks that are out there :)
but if you can find a good newsagents and they save your copies, then i'm sure they could call to remind you if you hadnt been in for a while, and we often have people request this. :)

I love to crochet. I learned in a youth group for church when I was 12. I did it for a year maybe and then didn't pick it up again until I was 34 or so. I found after my eye surgery it was painful to watch tv, read or cross stitch, but I could crochet because I had the pattern memorized (I made 12 afghans all of the same pattern) that I could do it with my eyes closed. I would only open them to check on what I stitched every now and then. I haven't corcheted since then (got a little burned out) and I have a couple of unfinished projects I'd like to do. Unfortunately it's hard to crochet when your dog wants to sit in your lap and she's a little big for a "lap dog".

One stitch design is the ripple style. I can never seem to get my stitches to make that zig-zagy look quite right. I should probably practice it more.

Oh, if you want a good book to help you stitch something up try this book out.

Image

I bought it many years ago and my mom borrowed it to stich something for me. You start stitching a square of single crochet, then a square for double crochet, then tripple crochet, and so on. Each square you do is a little different and a little more complicated/harder than the last one. By the time you're done you've done about every kind of stitching there is in crochet. I pulled the image off of Joann.com but I'm sure you can find the book on ebay or elsewhere.

Please do yourselves a favour and check the total cost of the whole lot - these can work out very costly and a good book would be cheaper by far and give as much or more information. (Now ask me how I know????)

There are some very good books with techniques out there.

Pengwenn, do you mean something like the Round Ripple? I've done several as baby snuggle blankets (and am working on one now, intermittently), they're great for using up odds and ends of threads :-). They look like this:

Do you know what the problem is with the zigzags? Do you add or lose stitches?

I've tried making a couple of afghans with just a standard ripple (zig-zag) pattern. For some reason I always miscount or my stitch doesn't stay consistently tight/loose through the whole thing. I usually just give up, undo it and try a different pattern. I had problems when I first started doing granny squares for another afghan. But after I made a couple 100 of them or so I got the hang of 'em.

Hey are any of you having trouble with the double crochet?
Cos I cannot get mine to look like their example! That's if I follow their instructions:
Specifically the one saying that after making the first row of doubles you need to go
under both arms of the previous row.
If I do, it doesn't look like their pic, but if I just go under one arm it looks pretty darn close! (No pun intended ;) )
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong..?

Help much appreciated x

I agree, you usually end up paying hundreds on the whole collection, but I'm sure there are some fantastic books for a fraction of the price and one's that will explain how to do it easier...I used to get the Knitting mag years ago, in the 80's I think it was, and found that I learnt better from a book that my friend gave me

I learned to crochet at school, when I was 13, and have been at it since, with a sabbatical now and then...LOL....
I've made "afghans",using the granny square, but haven't tried the round version. It looks like a huge doily to me....
