not sure if I like this

Post by *barb* »

I made this but kind of feel a bit disappointed. I'm not sure if I dont like it because it is bad or if it's because it's not something I would hang in my house.

honest opinions.

It was supposed to be a square in the pattern, so i changed the shading around the butterfly as I wanted to put it in a hoop and it's a present for a friend.

Now, i am not so sure if I will give it to her and it's her party next week.

I like the subject but it's not something that screams out at me and I like the colours.

I look at it and think "that's nice"but it doesn't grab me IYSWIM

Like when you are looking at patterns and kits and some you just love and can't stop dreaming about them and so they end up in stash and get done and others you look at and think "yeah thats nice" and they end up in stash but never get a look at. Well, it's in that category.

She is hippy and free spirited, thats why i think the butterfly would suit her.

I think it is wonderful. I know that I do those projects were I don't like them, but hey, they aren't for me. As long as the person who is recieving them loves it, then it is perfect. :D

Just asked my daughter who is fanatic about butterflies and she likes it, but to me its in the "yeah its nice category" and i would accept it but it just doesn't lash out at me. Sorry if i am being honest but you did ask for honest opinions. :D

I like it, but think it would look better in a smaller frame, and maybe a darker one. There is a lot of plain fabric around the edge because the frame is quite big, which detracts from the butterfly and makes it look a bit washed out.

Maybe try a smaller frame in a bright red or orange to really set the colours off?

I'm trying to avoid doing some work, so I mocked this up in Paint. Hope you get the idea, I think it really makes a difference.

wow, that does make a difference. Now, i like it like that but still wouldn't hang it in my house. I thought about it this afternoon and decided that what i didn't like was the "washed out" look as you say.

I might try and find a smaller hoop frame in that burnt orange colour or a brown one.

I have a week. My local craft shop only has the olive green, cream and brown wood like ones.

That was a 15 cm diameter hoop ring, i think I need to find a 10cm one.

Thanks for your help. I find it hard to give a present I made that I dont like.

I like the butterfly and the colouring is very delicate.
BUT!! the frame colour is wrong!!

Megandmog has brought it to life with the darker frame colour and by reducing the frame size too! :applesauce: :applesauce:

So any chance you could do the same barb?

It's amazing what a difference a frame can make!

I normally get my stuff done professionally, I have just started using these frame hoops and have a few of these cream ones. I have coloured aida fabric so am thinking that I might need to keep these cream frames for when I do stuff on coloured fabric or something that is darker in the picture.

I need some advice re: framing with hoops. I always pick out my own frames at the framers and colours ect, and never have a problem and never really picked up on the frame being the issue with the butterfly.

That's very true (unless it's something the recipient has specifically asked for. )

For what it's worth, I like your butterfly, the delicate colours etc. Not what I would choose for myself, but nevertheless I like it. I also agree with the other comments about the frame. I'm always astonished at the way the 'right' frame adds a whole new dimension to our work.

Good luck in sourcing something suitable!

well, her birthday is 9th september and I found a brown 10cm hoop frame in my stash ( boy, I found things i didn't know I had  ) and it's too small. That one it is in is 15cm and they don't come in anything inbetween. I went to the craft shop for a hoop frame for it, nothing suitable for the size.

So, now I have to think of something else. I am going to try finding a photo frame to fit it or my other thought was to put orange bias binding over the hoop to change the colour but that would look tacky I think. I may consider a same size hoop but in brown, they have some of them in 15cm. It may look a bit better but will still be a bit too big. like the original one.

Failing that, I am not sure what i can make it into. I thought maybe getting a round paper mache box the size and using it as the lid cover. That was my only other idea.

or has anyone got any other ideas on what i can make it into?
