1st attempt at blackwork

Post by Dazbo666 »

1st attempt at blackwork ? ... erm, OK I decided to substitute some other colours in the project.
(I'm planning to use the finished project as a Christmas card)

I've actually stitched quite a lot more than this, but didn't get a final piccy

Considering I usually avoid backstitching etc if at possible, I'm really enjoying doing this project

Nice work! I've only done tiny bits of blackwork so far (on my Xmas cards) but would love to do more in the future. The colours you used are very effective.

Very effective use of colour! Where did you find the design? Or are you making it up as you go along :-)?

That looks really cool, is blackwork the same as backstitch?

That's looking great! Blackwork lends itself to quick cards, amazingly enough. I use a lot of Holbein stitch, as well as back stitch, when doing blackwork (uses less thread!) and makes using metallics easier, too.

@ Mabel, I found the chart just the other day from one of the website links on the Craft Bubble website.
EDIT : Just had a look and the original freebie design states that it's the copyright of Banu Demirel at http://www.sebadesigns.com

@ Becca, I've used a combination of backstitch and double running (holbein) stitches on this design - whichever is the most convenient at the time.

I have another progress pic to post later this evening. I managed to get a few hours quiet time this afternoon, and managed to get about 85% completed...

Thanks everyone for your supportive comments :applesauce:

Well I sent a link to this site by email to the pattern designer Banu Demirel and already had a response... with a .pdf file of 10 free blackwork bookmarks as a thankyou for promoting her designs  :applesauce:
...and yes, I'm starting to realise just how addictive blackwork can be 8)

That's great, Dazbo! :D I love it! :applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce:

As a very recent convert to blackwork myself, after being too scared to try for years, I can recommend it to everyone who can ply a needle! It's great to do and SO effective - and, as Dazbo has shown, you don'r have to stick with black thread!
I'm planning to do more myself, but I have a couple of other projects I want to do first.

OK, I've just managed to upload todays progress

Image

The original chart has a stylised pointed star in the centre, but I'm considering putting some sort of "Pax" / peace sign in there. The design is going to be mounted as a Christmas card for my grandmother, and she's quite religious, so I thought it would be a fitting addition
