I managed to get the backstitch done round the two large feathers, then thought I'd have a break from all the boring black and do the gold and blue dangly bits with beads on! Yay! My first effort at sewing beads on. Apart from the fact that two of them had holes too small for even a size 28 needle to get through, so I had to unthread the needle and slot the thread through the bead by hand (very fiddly), it went ok. Hope they look alright.

Thanks, TB, I was pleased with them. At least I've had a practise now so when I come to stitching all the gold beads on my 12 Days sampler (there must be a couple of hundred of them!) at least I know what I'm doing!

Try a beading needle, reeeelly thin, long, and supremely sharp things, Mill Hill do em i think, i've no idea what size mine is - i got it in a kit, the ones you use for your jewellery will be a different sort, i reckon?

Hmm, there's a thought, I'll have to order some beading needles, certainly before I try sewing hundreds of beads on the sampler. Funnily enough, I don't use a needle for making my jewellery, to date I've threaded them by hand. Trouble is, a lot of the beads, such as glass pearls (like the dark grey ones on the bracelet you like), have holes only just big enough for the beading wire, so I'd be amazed if even a microscopically tiny needle would fit through.

Very effective beads! I prefer to use a size 28 needle when possible, but sometimes (and with petite beads always, I would have thought) you can't do without a beading needle. I prefer the short ones, as I find the long ones very difficult to finish off with, especially when I working with a small hoop or frame.

You have done a super job of it. the beads really look great. I was going to suggest a beading needle also I have a packet of them and they go though just about any bead I have come across. But since I don't do jewlery that is not alot. :D

Well, I shall definitely be getting some beading needles before I tackle all those on the 12 Days sampler!

Did a bit more of the backstitch on this yesterday....

Sarah I've just bought two little kits from Mill Hill and as they both have a beading needle I've got a spare. Would you like me to pop it in the post for you? I'm stitching the tiniest of seed beads with them and they fit okay - but it's very fiddly to get the thread through the eye as it is so slim. If you'd like one, just pm me your address.

Great progress, the backstitch really finishes it off nicely! :D I used a beading needle for my bracelets I made, and they're so thin and bend so easy
