My first SAL - Winnie the Pooh Afghan

Post by StitchingMel »

The first time I've tried an Afghan - I don't have a "pattern" as such but have a copy of "Winnie the Pooh Seasons in Cross Stitch" so taking little snippets from there.

Here's my first bit (it's Tigger from the bottom left hand side of the pattern book).

I've always wanted to stitch an afghan but I haven't found the right patterns to use throughout the whole piece. I think doing Pooh, Tiger and Eeyore patterns is great. I'll be interested in seeing how this moves along. I hope you post pictures often.

Hi Pengwenn (sorry I don't know how else to refer to you :D ) I think I'll update probably once a week as I only really get evenings to stitch in with four little ones running round, school runs, etc, etc. I'm really loving it - it's the first time I've tried anything except Aida and if it turns out okay, I'm going to have a look around for the Disney Babies book and have a try of those.

A great start :applesauce:
I did two small afghan cushion squares a little while ago, the fabric is lovely to work on, so soft :D

A good start - I am really interested to see your progress, may want to try it in the future.

My "official" Disney threads arrived from Sew&So this morning so can really start whizzing along now. I started Tigger with a very similar orange that I had and have done all of the orange and black but have waited to finish him until I had the proper colours so made a start on Winnie the Pooh with the some of the "official" gold I had in a bundle from Ebay.

Will post pics on Saturday (because you'll really see the difference then :D :D)

Just finished the backstitching on Tigger and I'm soooooooooooooo disappointed because ..................... well I really wish I'd taken a picture BEFORE and AFTER the backstitching. It's really, really added gorgeous detail.

Here's the completed Tigger

And the start of Pooh

And this is what Pooh will look like when complete

Picture quality isn't too good as I'm using the webcam in artificial light but hopefully you get the idea. I'm not doing the grass/flowers under Pooh's feet as I didn't with Tigger's.

Mabel - I'm really loving it. I was a bit overwhelmed when I first started but I've broken it down into thinking of each picture as a separate project. The finished size is going to be 38" x 30". The squares are 5.5" each and I'm doing 10 with picture and 10 without. Not sure if you'll understand this but my basic pattern will be:

Tigger/Blank Squ/Piglet/Blank Squ (Row1)
BlankSqu/Eeyore/BlankSqu/Winnie (Row 2)
Winnie/Blank Squ/Tigger/BlankSqu (Row 3)
BlankSqu/Piglet/BlankSqu/Eeyore (Row 4)
Tigger/BlankSqu/Winnie/BlankSqu (Row 5)

It took some planning to ensure none of the same characters were touching each other :!: :!:

Sounds like a great pattern -- and good thinking to see it as all separate projects! I've got an alphabet afghan waiting for me (well, two actually, as they were sold as one lot :-)) and a lovely floral alphabet from some old magazines, and I think I'll try and do a letter, then other things, then another letter, and so on; it's supposed to end up as a lap blanket (throw?) for those cold winter nights :-).

I'm definitely an evenweave convert now

I think I'm going to be really brave on the next one and get a large piece of evenweave and working at "squaring" it off myself and perhaps look at stitching the Disney Babies. My OH's daughter (aged 13) has just thrown away her comfort blankie (  ) and loves WTP and I have a sneaky suspicion she may come chasing after this once it's done  :D

Tigger looks great. I think he is so cute. I am not sure why you were disappointed??? :thinks: Pooh has made a great start.
