Its arrived:

The colour chart that comes with it is the (cheap and nasty) printed one. You would have thought they would have provided the threaded one

I am currently putting 20 skeins in each drawer section and I suspect you could just about squeeze in 50 skeins in each section so there is space to add more 8) .

This might take a while and it will never look this neat again

Jo

P.S. I have seen foam inserts for bobbins that fit 38 bobbins in each of the drawer compartments

Looks very impressive. Re colour chart -- DMC probably reasoned that, since you have all the threads and can compare the colours in real time, why would you need a thread chart. Good excuse to compare how good their photographic colour matching is to the real thing.

Looks remarkably like the one Tracy bought Christmas 2022.. :whoop:
They are nice.

The colour chart Tracy got was the same style printed one too. Having the whole range has been very useful, especially as my charting program can appear to be quite random in the colours it selects. Afterwards, it's almost impossible to see the mad colours it comes up with.

Richard

Finally I have finished putting the skeins in. To find one is missing  I have Emailed VeryCrafty asking they send me one of the missing (781) skeins so I can complete the collection.

One comment on the colour chart the one provided does not fit under the lid it over hangs the front:

Whereas the threaded chart fits beautifully under the cover and is held snugly:

I think counts as a lovely Christmas present from my parents :D

VeryCrafty have responded: 781 has been dropped as it is extremely close to 782.

Having checked my colour chart I agree. Some of my older bobbinated 781 threads are however a little darker and my HAED Seasons has both 781 and 782 (which are identical to the extent the 782 has 781 in brackets on it) so I have moved one of the darker 781s into the HAEDs thread collection.

Thank you Mabel, it is rather desirable - if I say so myself

Richard: Did Tracy find a means of labelling where the threads are in her cabinet? Putting the next 20 of the DMC threads in each drawer comparment means they are not split to say numbers 1-20, 21-40 but rather 1-20, 21-67, 69-158 ... and so on as there are lots of holes in the DMC thread numbers (and many of those holes were once thread numbers).

I am currently thinking of placing little cards in each drawer giving the list of thread numbers and their names. This would also weigh down the skeins preventing the threads rubbing on the drawer above and possibly getting pulled.

No, Tracy didn't. She hasn't even opened all the bags yet. She likes to sit there & gloat over them a little. However, in the last year, neither of us have done very much stitching - there has been so little time. And when we do have time we're so mentally shattered we just need to sleep.

So, sorry, can't help much in that way.

Richard

If someone would like a much cheaper and cheerful box to keep your threads in I have just brought a wooden jewellery box for £36 delivered:

Image

I've thrown out the drawer partitions and you can see each drawer is exactly the length of a skein. So this is going to be my Anchor thread box :D

Edit: I have just discovered that Anchor Skeins are longer than DMC ones and a little long for this cabinet  However they are all in

That's a lovely little "back-up" box! I wonder if there's anything like that in the UK.... :thinks:

I should have decided on all the silk dupion I wanted and ordered it in one go instead of paying three lots of postage  but oh well. This is the second lot, corn, primrose, wedgwood and lime.

Love the colours of dupion you have chosen.

Here it is on Fleabay:

It took one day longer than the DMC box to arrive. It was packed even better than the DMC box.

The ones in the drawers lift out leaving a velvet baize effect in the bottom.

Image

The top under the lid has has a row of round bars of foam on either side with spacers trimming the edge (there is no baize under these foam thingies). The foam bits could be used to poke needles in :thinks: I decided for now to put the sections back into the middle:

Image

As I said the drawers are a bit short for the longer Anchor skeins:

And too shallow for bobbins. But there are lots of other uses I can think of :D

And my final order from the Silk Route making use of their January sale: 4 fat quarters of handwoven silk dupion. These are slubbier than the powerwoven ones in my previous order, and I hadn't ordered any because I thought they weren't allowed for my Silk Shading certificate module. But last Saturday I found out that you can use handwoven if that happens to come in the colour you want, so i ordered these to have a few options. The dark blue is gorgeous (rather richer and darker in real life), I can just see it with a bright yellow daffodil on it!

Lovely colours. Personally I find some slubbiness in linen and silk to give character, but I can see that these might impede stitching to the RSN's high standards. It must be possible to source silk with no slubs, but the cost would be, undoubtedly, prohibitive given the way silk is made, spun and woven.

Actually, the RSN are happy with the slubby silk, my tutor Kathryn said you just have to be a bit careful with placing the design on the fabric in case of very big slubs.

Oddly, it is quite easy to find more even silk dupion - it's the difference between hand-woven (slubby and looser) and powerwoven (presumably on a power loom, smoother and tighter), and both are the same price at The Silk Route. The yellows, lime and mid blue in my previous picture are all powerwoven.
