There is a Term 'Legal Tender' in the UK.
It appears it's widely misunderstood, and I was one to misunderstand it myself until a few minutes ago.

Apparently somewhere that offers goods or services is permitted to choose the means of payment. They could require payment in 'Tons of dried Chickpeas' if they so wished.

However, if you have a debt that you have to pay, the holder of the debt cannot refuse payment if it's in 'Legal Tender' and then sue you for non-payment. They could, however, refuse to receive your payment if you only offer payment in 'Tons of dried Chickpeas', and then they could legitimately sue you for non-payment of the debt.
That is a very limited definition of legal tender (see https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/explain ... gal-tender), and is much more limited than I thought it was. Live & learn.

So, yes, the train companies can do this. And I'm sure they will be bewildered by the fact they have fewer customers.

There is only one place that I still regularly use cash, our local Chinese Take-away as they only take cash.
I do feel more comfortable about the risk of money-laundering now all their orders are recorded on an electronic till with built-in menu screen. However, their food is too good to go anywhere else regardless of any other concern. The whole kitchen is visible from the counter, and it's all cooked on site and is totally spotless.
