Avatars?
I was trying to put a picture as my avatar, but everything is to large…like to many KiB (whatever THAT means). I have an app to compress, but then it’s blurry and still to big. I finally just too one offered by the forum.
How do you all get yours acceptable?

Re: Avatars?
Avatars show as 80x80 pixels, so I resized mine to that and then uploaded it. That seemed to work. (Rather than going by file size)

Re: Avatars?
For things like that I use IrfanView, but most photo programs should be able to do it. First open your image and crop it to make it square. Then choose the Resize option (I'm sorry, as I don't know what program you use I can't tell you exactly where to find that option - probably in the Edit menu) and set the size to 80 x 80 pixels. Hope that helps!

Re: Avatars?
It was in the Image menu on mine. Wait, I'll do some screen shots.

Re: Avatars?
OK, so first open your image in your photo editing program. As I said, I use IrfanView, which doesn't strain your computer's resources but can do a lot of useful things to images.
Then select a square in your picture which will make a good avatar. In the screen shot you can see the selection box - in Irfanview you click CTRL + Y to crop, in other programs you may find it in the Edit menu. Or you can cut the selection (CTRL + X) and then paste it (CTRL + V)
In the next screen shot you will see the cropped, square image behind the Resize dialogue. In Irfanview it's CTRL + R, or you find it in the Image menu. This screen shot shows the original size in the height and width boxes.
I change that to the size I want, in this case 80 pixels:
Then I click OK, and it resizes the image. After that you can save it (under another name) and use it as your avatar!

Re: Avatars?
Maybe I’ll have to wait until I have my actual laptop out. Nothing I have on my iPad allows that.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Avatars?
I think that's probably best. Tablet/pad thingy's have 'Apps' which are 'Applications' with the majority of useful functionality eviscerated - hence the eviscerated name. I have tried to do something similar on my Android tablet, and wasted a good hour exploring every function and obscure shaped icon to discover nothing worthwhile. They're for consumers of internet content, and creating exactly what you want is possible so long as you only want the limited range offered.
I find it terribly frustrating. Tablets are powerful general purpose computers - more powerful by far than any PC I had until 2006 - and the software & operating systems are so crippled by design that you can't access that power normally.
Regards,
Richard

That's my little friend Surus.
He is rather famous/infamous in Model Engineering circles
