Re: 2021 Deliveries and Stash Acquisitions

We have just had our last Sewing group meeting before the new restrictive Covid measures come in. Not as many as normal braved it - having to sit in a howling gale with all the windows open in December has been putting people off

Young Pam (82) brought along her unframed cross stitch pieces to show us and asked "if we would like one please help ourselves  what ever is left I will try to get rid of at the Christmas village hall sale, but I hate doing that as I rarely get rid of more than one or two"

I asked Pam for this piece:

You know I love Robins  so I had to have it.

There was about 30 pieces and only one other person wanted any of the others. Having waited half an hour I asked Pam if could I have this one as well:

It will look lovely on the wall in my spare bedroom (where I keep my stash and the sewing machine.

They both need a wash where they have been in storage but they are rather nice :D

What a lovely gesture! I can see why you chose the Robins. That ABC sampler is fantastic! I've never seen one like that. I would have snapped that up like shot. Perfect for a craft room.

Both of them are amazing with so much detail. I am sure you will love them even more once they are washed and lightly ironed.
When ironing any embroidery I was taught eons ago that the work goes face down and just lightly press the back. It helps to accent the stitching.

Just a remark. From all stitchy magazines, let alone internet experts, we can learn that embroidery should be ironed on a thick towel. Rubbish! On at least 8 layers of fabric which is not fluffy! The best is to iron one's stitched finish on a quilt case or a sheet folded in 4. Did try ironing on a towel once, since then I know better.

That's a good point Lyudmila, I've often found a fluffy towel far too textured - I will try your quadruple-folded duvet cover next time!

Can't help boasting. Not my typical stash acquisitions, but I did need to buy them some day. That day was yesterday.
Image
So now I have 12 DMC thread storage boxes- 11 for storage, 1- a work box. Tomorrow stickers with DMC numbers will arrive (forgot about them yesterday) and then all the threads will be rearranged - greens and reds will at last have 2 boxes each, and all cardboard bobbins will go into the rubbish bin, and stickers will be used instead of writing them by hand with a pencil.
Yes, it will take some time to do all that, but it will make my stash look neater and better arranged, will it not?

Is that vinylweave on the right? That's not easy to find anymore.

All useful stuff that we can't have too much of

I would recommend writing the numbers on under the stickers as they are very good but have been known to come off.

Mabel, it is better than vinyl. It is American Darice plastic canvas 14ct white! I was so happy when I at last found it that ordered 10 sheets. The colour stuff is glittering foamiran sticky at the backside, which I use as backing for bookmarks and ornaments. It works much better for me than sticky felt as it
makes the ornaments firm, they dont try to bend after stitching. Felt is too soft and flexy for the purpose. I hope you can guess what I am trying to explain.

Thank you, Jo. I wish you had written this last night, before I ordered two sets of them. :(
But thank you for the know how- I will write the numbers on under the stickers. That said, I now remembered why I did not use them when I first saw them on sale. I did start using, a few fell off, and the rest went to my then little GD and were stuck everywhere, but were gone without trace long ago. Stupid me, I forgot all this when I was ordering the stickers.

Not really an acquisition, but a friend gave us these dinky [positive word in British English :-) ] little stockings (they've each got a chocolate in them too!) and a very cleverly made card - it's not patchwork as such, I think, it just seems to have been folded and layered, but it's very effective.
