Newbie - Hi

Hi, I've been lurking for a while and finally have taken the plunge.

I've been cross stitching for a few years, with needlepoint for a couple of years before that. I still love needlepoint and have assorted canvases and tap wools/pearl threads put by for when I retire. Trouble is, I have a lot of cross point projects put by too, and my patterns stashes are getting to be overwhelming. I took the step of putting them all into slip covers and then fitting all the slip covers into lever arch ring binders. Now at least they're a bit organised. Still - it's good to have choices, right??

I've been slowly passing my chart books to charity shops though, because to be honest I do prefer the patterns I've either got in magazines or on Ebay. I'll happily buy back editions to get a chart I want, and of course then I end up with a few extras as well.......

Ah well - could be worse! I could play drums, or trumpets or things. At least this is a quiet hobby .....

Hello WuThree and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! I am so glad that you came out of the shadows. I personally think its a whole lot more fun out here. We have quite a few members who have several crafts they work on. Some are needlework other than cross stitch and we have a lot of knitters and crocheters and a few weavers and wood workers and a whole section devoted to these Other Crafts. We also have an expression to describe having way too much stash. SABLE which is Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. Be aware that we also have a tendency to encourage this behavior in each other.
Looking forward to getting to know you and to seeing your projects. Are there any subjects that you tend to do more than others? I'm prone to cats myself.

Carole
:D

Welcome to the forum from a rather grey and blustery west of Scotland! Glad you found us and have de-lurked. SABLE is definitely a thing, but the Mods take no responsibility for the enablers on this forum (being some of the worst offenders...).

Thanks for the welcome! Comforting to know my acquisitive habits are a known condition (not that I want any sort of treatment for it!!)

At the moment I'm stitching a card with lots of metallics and variegated threads, and am halfway through a Lesley Teare SAL (the Sunbonnet Sue from a couple of years back), and am really looking forward to getting those done because I have a yummy art deco chart for a richly coloured country cottage. It'll come out at 10" x 8" which is a nice medium sort of a size leading gently to a larger Dimensions Buddha I want to do.

Of course there'll the usual breaks for cards and tags (and a totally gorgeous set of tree deccies - I bought a Dimensions set of playful snowmen).

I like richly coloured pieces but also I like clever colourwork that uses lots of shades of a colour to add depth.

Gonna be a busy year :D

Welcome WuThree from me in blustery blessedly cool Brisbane (Aus) it is great that you have decided to de-lurk and join in the fun.
Like you I have a fairly large stash of cross stitch charts, kits etc then my little sister threw our mother'sand grandmother's unfinished embroideries for me to finish. As for all the charts/kits etc I would advise caution when looking at the "Stash Acquisitions" page or you will end up with more than you really need for your life span. :D :whoop: :tizzy:

Welcome from me in SW France! It sounds to me as if you do not need too much encouragement to ADD TO YOUR STASH!
So pleased that you have decided to de-lurk!

I find music helps break the silence when stitching, although heavy rock does tend to make me miss a stitch or use the wrong shade!!

Heh - my son plays professionally and teaches guitar and I remember his first practice sessions when he was learning, 16 years ago. He played by the hour and it's turned out wonderfully for him and is his life's joy, but I wouldn't say the first few years were a joy for those of us living with him  Oddly, when he moved out the lack of a constant guitar background was the most difficult thing to get used to when stitching.

As for stashes, no - I need no encouragement even though I know that statistically I can never stitch all the kits put by, let alone the gorgeous charts. I gave about 15 full needlepoint kits to the charity shop last year and apparently they sold well, which really pleased me. I might pass them the rest of the needlepoint and just keep the cross stitch kits. I have grown the prefer it which I never thought would happen.

My only problem is that all my frames are wooden - built to take the weight of the canvas - whereas now I want to switch to Q snaps or something. Seems such a waste of so many frames but they're very heavy in comparison.
