Hi All

I have set up this new section because I have noticed that a lot of you have items that are no longer needed. Some members have items to trade.

I have always been very cautious about allowing the forum to become a trading site because I didn't want it to be commercialised. Keeping it free from members promoting their own profit-making projects has kept the quality of the content of this forum to a very high standard. However, I believe that the time has come to test the water and open a new section.

Just a quickie Alex, can anyone with less than 30 posts see this section? Its just that with my site I've done something similar and noticed people tended to spam in order to get access until I hid it?

I just logged out and came on as a guest, and I could see the board. If they can see it's there, even if they can't access the content, it might encourage them to just post enough to use it like Liz says.

Thanks, Alex -- this sounds like a very useful section! I hope outsiders won't manage to abuse it.

By the way, does this mean the fabric swap moves here?

I shall wait and see what other feedback I get from you all and then decide how to allow access to this section.

Okay, This All seems to be working now .

With regard to 'outsiders' we've set a restriction on this thread so people need to have been registered for a week and have 30 or more posts in order to view and post in it. Hopefully this will keep out the spammers.

The only problem we've had doing this was that was during the install of the mod it has overwritten everyone with 30+ posts avatar. This won't happen again and was just an unfortunate part of the install.

Hopefully you will all be able to add your avatars again via the 'User Profile' area.

We do still have the old avatar files, so if someone can't find or upload their own, we can help. We'll just need a description of it in order to find which one it was. PM me if you need help with this.

Any poblems or questions please ask them in this thread.

hi threadbear. Yes, it is a tricky one, while we don't want it awash with spam, newbies need to know its there too. We'll be monitoring things as Alex has said to see how it works out.

I can see this section of the forum being extremely useful to members but know that forums can be totally spoilt for the users if the commercial people get a foothold. I know that I am a relative newby but one of the things that I like most about this forum is that we are all stitchers not sellers trying to sell their goods. Hopefully the restraints that have been put in place will deter that type of poster and the forum will stay healthy.

Ooooh loving the sections. Here's my tuppence worth.

I doubt very much that this section will be abused whilever our members stay as they are. See the members we have now are really close, we're a lot like a really big family. Looking after each other and when we get a new member we incorporate them into that family. By the time they've been here a week and are able to access this part, they're going to be part of the family and not want to harm the site. And I think that will hold true unless we start advertising somewhere and get like a million people joining a day. In my experience of small sites advertisements are what ruin them because they get sudden jumps in population. Adding things to the site itself is generally ok because the members of said site tend to love their site and protect it and will continue to whilever there are a manageable amount of new people coming into it.
