Mabel Figworthy wrote: Tue Jan 21, 2020 2:02 pm In France I think it's Seven a Day (Wendy, do you know?), but they are allowed to count potatoes which don't count under the UK guidelines (to stop people from counting portions of chips as vegetables, I think :-))
So all it meant was "now for the vegetables!" :-)
PS At a stitching group I attend one lady quite seriously asked, when telling us she'd found out potatoes don't count, whether noodles would... :-)
Yes you are right, Mabel. Although I do wonder at the French peoples take on that seeing how many Tins of Vegetables I see in their shopping baskets!! In our Saturday Market there are vegetables that I hadn't seen before, some I have tried. Also until recently it was impossible to buy parsnips as they were regarded as Cattle Food and corn-on-the-cob is grown for chicken feed and is Totally Inedible  although you can, of course, buy TINS of the kernals!!

Oh, boy, I would love a noodle tree.
In that case I just have to share this video. In 1957, the very serious, very factual BBC programme Panorama played an April Fool joke by reporting on the annual spaghetti harvest in a village in Switzerland :-)

Maybe because Ukrainians have their borshch (soup of meat, beetroot, carrot, potato, cabbage, onion) and love for vegetable salads, our mothers never forced us to eat additional vegetables. Have read about vegetables as a must in "Horrid Henry" series. By the way, I started reading one of those books on the plane of British Airways to Kyiv.I can imagine what the flight attandants must have thought about the person bursting out with laughter from time to time without any visible reason. :D
So Ukrainians do not have this fixed number of "must eat" veges. That is why I had to ask Mabel.

Now I know how the veggie companies like Green Giant and Bird's Eye (don't know if those brands are across the pond??) get the veggie based noodles they sell. And why they are so expensive to buy. Must be they import them from Switzerland and Italy. I don't think we have any noodle trees over here.
Thanks for the link to the video Mabel. It helps explain how they do it.

Does the expression "to hang noodles onto one's ears" mean in England what it means here: telling lies and giving promises nobody is going to fulfiil?

Nicola, I hope you don't mind my continuing for at least one more post this discussion of noodle trees, but I do want to thank Lyudmila for that new expression of hanging noodles over one's ears. Now when I watch politicians and they lie and give promises they have no intention of keeping, I can just picture them with noodles hanging over their ears and laugh instead of getting angry!! My day is already brighter!

Carole, the noodles are hanging over our/your ears, not on theirs! They hang noodles on other people's (their audience/voters, etc.) ears.

I would like it the other way too. But then, I have heard that liars' noses grow as they lie. So we may imagine them with growing noses.

Some politicians, and I'll name no names, have noses so long at this point that they surely must require a rest to support it!
