"Carpet Work" as referred to in Jane Austen novels

My niece is reading "Sense and Sensibility" for the first time, and asked me what, specifically, "carpet work" refers to. I'd never thought about it beyond some form of Victorian embroidery, but if I'd had to guess, I would've thought something similar to latch hooking. Does anyone know exactly what carpet work would be referring to? Thanks!

As far as I know this is nothing to do with carpets but is in fact a stitch used in tapestry and embroidery to fill in a space. Similar to satin stitch, would be used for example to fill in the colour of a dress or trousers or similar areas. So if she was doing carpet work it was the more mundane boring part rather than the delicate intricate aspect of the item.
