Please don't labour under the illusion that I'm in any way creative! I'm helping with an after-school club next week, and am getting some practice in! Just look up "bobble hat decoration" or something like that and voilá!

Basically, it's as follows:
1. cut about ring of between 1/2" and 3/4" from a cardboard loo roll tube.

2. cut pieces of yarn that are at least 6" long (wrap around a ruler and cut them in half is what I do...; you could use a book?). You'll need about 80 6-inch lengths, depending on the thickness of your yarn. This is great for ends of balls, and I've used almost everything from sock yarn, right up to aran weight.

3. Fold each piece of yarn in half. Put the loop end through the tube and then put the tails through the loop (up and around the tube, obviously) and pull it snug. (This is a lark's head knot, I guess.)

4. Continue right around the tube, pulling the yarn snugly and making sure that each piece doesn't overlap any of its neighbours.

5. Once the tube is entirely covered, neatly gather up the ends sticking up, give them a little twist to keep them all together, and then push them back through the tube -- that's how you make the "turn up" of the hat.

6. Comb the yarn with your fingers to make it nice and neat, then take a piece of your yarn (of course you have a piece left, don't you?) or any other braid or anything really, and double knot it around the yarn, about an inch (two fingers, like bourbon!) from the top of the turn up. This makes the hat part.

7. Tie the ends of your knotted yarn together to make the hanger for the ornament, put a bit of stuffing (like a bit of Kleenex, even) into the hat to make it stand up and look fat. (At this point I start fussing over the yarn again, straightening it out above the knot of the hanger, but you don't need to be so OCD.)

8. Trim the yarn ends to suit yourself and make them look like the bobble on the hat.

And there you have it! You can add beads and buttons and all sorts. The size of the hat depends on the size of the original cardboard tube ring.

I can't believe I've not posted on this thread since December...!

Well here is Winter Loch finished. To recap: a Mary Hickmott design, on ice blue 16-ct aida using full and half cross stitches. Still to be framed, and I noticed one of the little half-stitches has caught on something and needs repaired. Overall, I'm pleased with it.

That is such an atmospheric landscape - and it's come out beautifully!
Finding a frame may be a challenge :thinks: :thinks: do you think you'll have to have it custom-made?

Oh, it's definitely a custom-made frame job. But worth it. I know a really good framer, who is also very reasonable, so it won't break the bank to finish it up. (I hope!)
