I'm wondering if anybody can recommend somewhere to convert two portraits of my children into cross stitch charts for me to stitch for my mum's birthday next May? I've never done it before and I want the pictures to be close matches...

There are several free programs that will do the conversion for you. To get the best results, however, you need to do some tweaks to the image during the conversion process. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, one of the members here, skitzzzzz, has done charts for folks. You could try contracting her through the PM system to see if she can help you.
