Pronunciation of Aida
Curious as to how everyone pronounces this. I never heard it said out loud so went with the way it was spelled, Aida, seeing it as Aid a.

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
Aid uh
Skeen
I've heard aida said lots of times and only ever heart it pronounced aid-uh.
Skein I think is more a where your from than anything as the Australians pronounce ei as ee whereas in other countries ei is aa.
Interesting
Also find it interesting that overseas they call it floss. We call it cotton or thread (floss is fluffy synthetic stuff you clean your teeth with over here).
And what they call needlepoint overseas is tapestry here whereas needlepoint here is embroidery.

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
I agree with Calico and Maggie.
Back home in Christchurch (NZ) I never heard the word "needlpoint" but only knew of tapestry and embroidery or "fancy work" - as my grandmother used to call it and embroidery cotton was always "thread".
Words are fun aren't they

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
Having read this thread I no longer know how I pronounce any of them!!
Sitting here saying skeen, skane, and just not knowing! I do know that my mum corrects me when I say one of them though.....
I have always said A ee da though.
I'm a bit confused with needlepoint and tapestry!
At least we all stitch crosses!!!

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
I am also agreed except that I had yet to decide how I wanted to pronounce "skein". My brain wants to go with "Skain" and now that it appears most everyone else says it this way, that is what I shall go with!MaggieM1750 wrote:Agreed, on both words.calico wrote:I pronounce them like this:

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
Skein with a long a for me. I think many words are regional in how they are spoken. But someone (can't remember who now) quite a few years back told me I said Aida wrong. I was too used to the way I said it that I couldn't change.
Nice to know I'm not alone.
Also pretty neat that the words, like cross stitch, doesn't matter how you say them, or work it, as long as you are consistent.

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
hmm I've always said a-ee-da (the Spanish way) and skine (the German way), maybe because of my European roots?
As a side note, it drive me bonkers when people call Mirabilia's Adia "Aida" and Lugana fabric "Laguna". Honest mistake and easy to make really, but I'm a bit OCD for things like that (lots of copy editing to do in my job)

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
I'm sitting alone in my works canteen thinking how I pronounce it. I can't actually at it out loud cause people will think I've lost it..
I think I say ay-da I'm not really sure? Maybe it's just my wee Scottish accent! :p

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
I'm like the majority in here. Aida-A-DUH Skein-SkAne.
My hobby store calls Aida- AIDS, the last A is SILENT to her, and Skein- Skin.
After I shop and is checking out, I laugh
at her as she is saying how many AIDS baggies, that's how she has them cut and stored in, and how many SKINS I have.
HAPPY STITCHING IN STITCHING LAND.

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
Great question! I have heard Aida pronounced so many different ways that I'm wondering if the reason I don't like stitching with it, is because I can't decide how to pronounce it. Skein, has always been pronounced "skane" around me. For thread and for yarn. I also always thought Tapestry meant lovely fabric wall hangings, often woven in great detail, and was surprised and I guess a bit confused when I realized what I call needlepoint is called tapestry across the pond. I refer to, I guess stranded cotton - the good old fashioned DMC threads - as both floss and thread.
still not sure what to call aida, so I guess I will stick with the evenweaves.

Re: Pronunciation of Aida
In my world, Lugana is a beautiful fabric; Laguna is a beach in California. Skein is "skain" and Aida is ah-ee-duh. But isn't it funny how the more you say one word, the stranger it sounds?MaudL wrote:
