Ben & Jerry's ice cream is what many, many people think of first when they think of Vermont. The company was founded in 1978 by lifelong friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. They sent away for a correspondence course about how to make ice cream and practiced until they came up with their secret formula. What's interesting about their initial ice cream, and maybe why it's so amazingly creamy, is that Ben Cohen has ageusia; the inability to taste anything.

Ben & Jerry's original ice cream stand only lasted a couple months, but when they started packing their ice cream into pints a year later, that worked well. And the Free Cone day on their anniversary is still a tradition, only internationally as well.

They haven't always had an easy time getting their ice cream to the U.S. markets and international markets either. Haagen-Daas tried a few times to put up obstacles, but Ben & Jerry's always got through and they're an internationally known entity now. In 1988 they won the U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year award, presented by President Ronald Reagan.

Ben & Jerry's have also been known for their community works and environmentally conscious choices in their products, including never using any milk from cows that receive recombinant bovine growth hormone. When the U.S. Senate was considering allowing oil drilling in the Alaskan wildlife reserve Ben & Jerry's made the largest ever Baked Alaska (900 pounds) and parked it in front of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Not being able to eat Ben & Jerry's anymore is one of the foods I miss most from my dairy allergy...

Danforth Pewter has been around a long, long time. The company started when Thomas Danforth II opened a pewter workshop in 1755 in Connecticut. Generations of Danforths followed him into the trade and it was a booming business prior to the 1860s when almost every American home used pewter plates and cups.

The bottom fell out of the pewter trade after the Civil War when glass and ceramic became more affordable. The Danforths stopped making pewter for about one hundred years. The great-great-great-great-great grandson of Thomas Danforth II (Fred) and his wife opened Danforth Pewter in Vermont in 1975 and revived the family business. They've been growing and growing ever since and make some absolutely beautiful things.

All of their pewter is made in Middlebury, Vermont and is 100% lead-free. Their products also meet or exceed all FDA regulations for food safety. They have several artists that create unique works, and your smaller pieces like charms, earrings, candle holders, etc. I've purchased a pair of earrings for my Grandma and she loves them.

Strawberry Shortcake when I decide I deserve a special treat. The problem is that the pint of ice cream always seems to be just one serving. 5/10 now!

My favourite flavour was one of the 2 Twisted varieties where they mix 2 flavours together. I think it was called "everything but the..." and had huge chunks of white and milk or dark chocolate and a chocolate base.. mmmm Although Turtle Soup was a close second. Chocolate covered cashews and caramel swirl...

Today's numbers go up a bit earlier since I finish work early. They may be even earlier tomorrow, depends how busy things are.

32. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters/Keurig http://www.gmcr.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank

GMCR is a specialty coffee company currently located in Waterbury, Vermont. They started as a small coffee shop in Waitsfield, Vermont in 1981 and roasted their own coffee beans. Their coffee and coffee beans were so good that local inns and restaurants wanted to serve it as well, and the demand for Green Mountain Coffee grew and grew.

In 2006 GMCR bought Keurig, a manufacturer of single-serve coffee brewers. Since then GMCR skyrocketed and they continue to do well, even though I can't drink coffee anymore. I was an addict to their coffee and DH bought me a Keurig for Valentine's Day a few years back.

The Keurig system uses K-cups that have a single serve dose of coffee in them and work in their special brewers. However, you can save the used K-cup and add your own coffee when you use a special lid. GMCR sells these or you can find after-market lids that sometimes work better.

Green Mountain Coffee is widely sold here in Vermont of course, but I believe you can find it in the rest of the U.S.A. as well. I'm not sure how much it shows up internationally as yet. GMCR also acquired the Van Houtte coffee empire based in Quebec. Van Houtte's are similar to Starbucks and a little more upscale than Tim Hortons. The Van Houtte chocolate raspberry truffle coffee is fantastic..... provided you like flavoured coffee. If you don't, the best selling kind of Green Mountain Coffee is Breakfast Blend.

In the renovated Waterbury train station GMCR opened a cafe and you can sample many different flavours of their coffees there.

27. Trapp Family Lodge http://www.trappfamily.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank

Many of you are likely familiar with the von Trapp story that was made into The Sound of Music. The real story isn't quite as dramatic of course, but the movie has grains of truth. The von Trapp family did emigrate and ended up in the U.S. where they toured for most of the 1940s. When they came across Vermont, they thought the mountains were similar to their beloved Alps, and decided to settle near Stowe.

The original lodge opened in 1950. There was a terrible fire in 1980, and the entire lodge was replaced. The Trapp acreage includes 2500 acres of woodland and trails and there are many activities both indoor and outdoor. As of 2010 they even have their own brewery and I've heard great reports of their beer from friends and family.

The lodge is really picturesque. It's in the Alpine or Swiss style and located in a beautiful region of Vermont. The roads up and down are fairly steep, but not impassable any time of the year.
