OT - agony (warning: bit of a rant)

Post by purgatory »

hello fellow stitchers, I just felt the need to have a little rant, a week ago i pulled something in my back and it hasnt got any better

I have to crawl into bed (slowly and painfully) trying to do anything normal and simple is agony and I'm walking around like igor dragging one leg behind me

been to A&E just now on the advise of my Dr and waited in the really uncomfortable chairs for 3 hours to be told its muscular and here are some more pain killers! also to keep moving...despite the fact that the more I try to walk the worse the pain becomes!

I'm sure some of you probably suffer with back pain and understand my situtation I'm not after sympathy but I'm just so damn frustrated!
as of tuesday I cant even sit in my chair to do my stitching (which I'm sure is adding to my frayed nerves)

so there we are...rant over

I get sciatica so know how painful it can be to walk, sit, stand and lie down

If it is sciatica you have try and make sure your Knees are below your hips when sitting down

Hope it improves fast

ohhh back pain is a total nightmare!

Poor you having to wait all that time and then just getting told to take more painkillers  try getting a posture correcter type thing for your chair (or sit in a different chair) - it might help to give your back a bit more support and enable you to sit and stitch a little - my dad swears by them when his back plays up (my dad suffers from chronic back pain as a result of 2 or 3 car accidents over the years -none of which were his fault and thank goodness we had good cars)

the other thing I would recommend is heat. Try a bath or shower as hot as you can handle for as long as you can handle - it should help the muscle to relax a little bit. Heat pads can also help though I've never tried them

Sadly the drs etc are right, a small amount of exercise is probably a good idea to stop the muscles from totally seizing up but be careful not to overdo it and do more damage

fingers crossed that you are back and stitching asap!

I also have those sciatica attacks and they are the worst in the morning, but get better usually, as the day goes on and I do a bit more walking. The worst time is after I vacuum. Washing floors on the other hand doesn't hurt it a t all and some days I never have it. I have never gotten to the point where I couldn't stitch. What a bummer that must be. :x: that it gets better soon.

Purg, can you get to see s Bowen or Crainial sacral therapist? Both very good choices for muscular problems, more appropriate than a chiropractor at this stage.

Heat helps muscle spasm/tear and make sure you take the painkiller before the Pain gets worse, don't try snd be brave for a week or so.

Pain is horrid and makes everything so difficult. Be careful with your guts s's well, analgesics play havoc with them.

Gentle yoga will help as well. If it's still a big problem after three weeksngo back to the GP and get x r ays to rule out nasties. V unlikely but if it drags on you want to be sure.

You have all my sympathy. I truly feel for you. I completely understand your frustration. Sometimes the frustration from the lack of mobility and inability to live a normal life, compounded by the constant pain, is worse than the pain itself. Of course, that stress compounds the original problem.

I feel for you.

I am currently dealing with pain in my knee that I had surgery on when I was 18. I have dealt with the pain ever since then, most times it is manageable but currently I have had problems because I twisted wrong and it swelled. I was just getting it to calm down and today while at work I slipped on wet floors while cleaning up our shop and I am back to swelling and extreme pain. So frustrating. I don't take pain pills although I have some as the stomach pain is worse. So I am icing and elevating. So mad at myself for not being more careful.

I have a dodgy back and sometimes get sciatica, I was told it was from horse riding, but might also be from falling off as well

Hope you feel some pain relief soon

Poor you! You have all my sympathy.  I hope the pain does go and it is just muscular. Try a heat pad. You can get some which heat up in a microwave. It helps me! I was nursing for years and got a 'bad-back' and still get sciatica occasionally (also used to ride/own horses so humping hay bales didn't help! )

Hubby put on a sock recently and yelped! He'd put a disc out....so easily done!

The doctors aren't very good at dealing with backs they like to give you pain killers and send you on your way its frustrating, I tend to go to the local osteopath nowadays when I'm in agony (I get sciatica and have a tilted pelvis) it is pricey but so worth it, I go in crippled and come out bouncing..well almost! But they certainly know more about what to do with you back than the NHS.

I hope you feel better soon

I know exactly how you feel i have suffered with joint pain from being little this affects every joint including my spine and non of the doctors or specialists that i have seen know what it is, after having my hubby talk me into going to the dr's again i was recently sent for yet more xrays, went back to my G.P for results to be told there was nothing on the xrays so nothing could be done he too sent me home with a prescription for yet more painkillers, the next day i couldn't walk due to my hips flaring up but there is nothing 'medically' wrong with me, i hope yours sorts itself out soon, people don't realise how debilitating it can be.

 Sounds like your having a rough time....I would consider maybe changing doctors or trying a different tactic, has anyone explored the possibility of a neuropathic origin of your pain? If there is no underlying physical cause there may be a problem with how your nerves themslves are sending signals to your brain.....many neuropathic pain patients feel no long term relief when using ordinary painkillers as these only treat the pain itself, not the actual cause of it. However some patients can find that anti-depressants can help as they can sometimes block the abnormal signals being received by the brain, another option that has seen some success is hypnosis...this method uses the brains ability to police its own activity and teaches it to ignore certain messages.

I am by no means an expert and I obviously don't know if you are suffering from this condition but I have just completed a module for my degree which just happens to be about pain and your symptoms seem very similar to what I have read about......I just thought that no-one can have too much information....especially when they are in pain, as you seem to be. :x: that a solution can be found for you.

I suffer with lower back pain and when mine flairs up I head right to the physical therapist. She does a combo of things like deep tissue massage, ultrasound therapy and a new technique called dry needling. Muscle relaxers also help but I try not to rely on them for too long. The therapist will also give you exercises to improve core strength with will help prevent future problems.
I have been where you are and it is noooo fun. In all instances, the pain starts to subside when you get the muscle spasms under control ( about a week or two). In the meantime, you just need to find a position you can tolerate ( even if it's standing up), alternate heat and cold compresses and have family member help you out. Keep us posted!

2 weeks ago I had a bad fall and apart from other injuries ended up with back spasms. My doctor told me to use ice packs rather than heat as heat increases blood flow causing greater inflammation. Lying on my back with my knees at a 90 degree angle helped with the pain, too.
thankfullly,, the spasms have now ceased and while I am stilll in pain I can handle it much better.

well its day 9 and nothing has changed (sorr lack of sleep caused a big brother moment there  )

well actually not quite true the pain has moved and brought with it a lot more stiffness, woke up at this silly time in the am and quite literally had to roll myself to more or less fall off my bed :?

taken my handful of painkillers and the last of my muscle relaxers (dont get any more cos they are addictive apparently, personally I would think u need to FEEL some sort of effect to become addicted but there we go) and will shortly attempt to get myself back into the bed untill they work a little (I hope)

unfortunately there is no longer any position in which I feel totally comfortable now, and standing is nigh impossible, had to kneel in the shower last night (that was after the ten minute struggle to get into the bath  )

but today my mum is visiting and hopefully bringing some heat pads with her and so im hoping that might help me a little and of course that a little lay down and maybe sleep while the painkillers work will also help

thanks again for all the helpful advise,
@calico unfortunately over here I would have to be refered to a physical therapist and that would take weeks or possibly months if the doctor would even be willing to send me
@steptash I am really sorry to hear of your troubles and I know how hard it is when doctors seemingly dont believe you or dismiss you (had that with another condition I have and had to fight for 8 years to get refered for proper treatment...I knew what it was but they dont like being told whats wrong with you!) but dont give up and keep pestering them for a diagnosis
