Up to 7/10! :)

I had a funny but unsettling thought as I went through my list this morning... we've each chosen 10 of these little baddies, can you imagine what we'd look like and how awful we'd feel if we actually HAD these 10 at the same time? We'd all of an interesting story to tell....

Time for todays picks.....
20 and 26!! (Yay I did a Jo  )

20. Streptococcus pneumoniae
Image
A significant human pathogenic bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae is recognized as a major cause of pneumonia in the late 19th century. Despite the name, this organism causes many types of pneumococcal infections other than pneumonia. These invasive diseases include acute sinusitis, otitis media (ear infection), meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord), bacteremia (bacteria in the blood), sepsis (systemic inflammatory response), osteomyelitis (bone-marrow infection), septic arthritis (arthritis caused by the infection of joint tissue), endocarditis (inner heart layer inflammation), peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs) , pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart)., cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissue with severe inflammation of the skin) and brain abscesses. Very busy microbe indeed!!
The bacteria is carried in the upper respiratory tract and it is spread by airborne or direct exposure to respiratory droplets from a person who is infected or carrying the bacteria. However, illness among casual contacts is infrequent.

26. Trypanosoma cruzi
Image
Chagas is named after the Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas, who discovered the disease in 1909. It is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to animals and people via the reduviid bug and is found only in the Americas (mainly, in rural areas of Latin America where poverty is widespread). Transmission occurs when the reduviid bug deposits faeces on the skin surface and subsequently bites; the human host then scratches the bite area enabling the parasite to enter the bloodstream. Chagas disease has an acute and a chronic phase. If untreated, infection is lifelong.
Acute Chagas disease occurs immediately after infection, may last up to a few weeks or months, and parasites may be found in the circulating blood. Infection may be mild or asymptomatic. There may be fever or swelling around the bite site. Rarely, acute infection may result in severe inflammation of the heart muscle or the brain. Following the acute phase, most infected people enter into a prolonged asymptomatic form of disease (called "chronic indeterminate") during which few or no parasites are found in the blood. During this time, most people are unaware of their infection. Many people may remain asymptomatic for life and never develop Chagas-related symptoms. However, an estimated 20 - 30% of infected people will develop debilitating and sometimes life-threatening medical problems over the course of their lives.

One for me today so I'm up to 5/10. Sounds like pneumonia is the least awful illness from #20 (easier than spelling it out) other than it brings me to the halfway mark. We should be getting a winner soon I think. Good luck to those of you close.

Got another pick today, so I am creeping up to 4/10. I'd like to think that slow and steady wins the race, and that I still have a chance here. But maybe that is wishful thinking! :D
