I don't have the Measels but I did have that number in my picks, so I join the land of 3/10.

Still at a big fat 0. I'm really cursing my decision to use the random number generator this time.

Hmmmm.... What are the odds that my number generator picked the same numbers as your number generator? Odds are definitely not in my favor! :P None of the picks today.

Ok managing to post early today as Wednesday is my study day at home....todays picks are 2 and 15!

2. Rhinovirus
Image
Rhinovirus is a species within the Picornaviridae family of viruses and are the main cause of the common cold. Symptoms of colds include sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and cough; sometimes accompanied by muscle aches, fatigue, malaise, headache, muscle weakness and loss of appetite. There are around 100 recognized types of Human rhinoviruses that differ according to their surface proteins, this is why we can catch a cold year on year, we are probably just coming into contact with a slightly different rhinovirus that our adaptive immune systems don’t recognize until it is too late!

15. Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Image
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a bacterium that is usually found in pairs, it is the causative agent of gonorrhea (also called "The Clap," which is derived from the French word "clapier," meaning "brothel") and it is transmitted via sexual contact. Infection can result in a purulent (or pus-like) discharge from the genitals which may be foul smelling. Symptoms may also include inflammation, redness, swelling, and dysuria (painful urination). If left untreated it may also cause infertility in women.
What I find interesting about this little critter is that they are mobile and posses pili (little hair like structures) to adhere to surfaces. They use their pili kind of like a grappling hook, extending them outwards and attaching to a cell wall which then signals the pilus to retract, dragging the cell forward. They are able to pull 100,000 times their own weight and it has been claimed that the pili used to do so are the strongest biological motor known to date. Also, this sneaky little bacteria has surface proteins called Opa proteins, which bind to receptors on immune cells. This prevents an immune response and renders the host unable to develop an immunological memory against the bacteria which means that future re-infection is possible.

Only at 2/10 even after all those nasties
rcperryls wrote: never had chicken pox either. My mother never did either. My sister did and we shared a bed, but I never got them. Mom even sent me to play with friends who had chicken pox (they thought weird things in those days) so I wouldn't have them as an adult, but never got em.

Not terribly weird Carole, some parents here in the UK still have chickenpox parties for their children, though health visitors advise against it.

Whoooo hoo, finally got another one! 2/10.

My sister never had chicken pox despite plonking her down repeatedly with chicken posed friends! Eventually she had to have the vaccine when she started her midwifery training. Strange given I had CP so very badly as a 5yo, I still have multiple scars, and I then got shingles at 29 after an operation. I thought that was bad until I got trigeminal neuralgia! But I'm always very wary about the damn virus.

Good bit of FYI though, if any of you do get shingles, it's really important to take L-Lysine as it has been shown to reduce the likelihood of post herpatic neuralgia.

:D I caught the cold. Not the cold, but the number 2. Seems really mild after some of the pathogens we've been reading about, though when I get a bad one, it doesn't seem mild. Now up to 2/10.

Ok folks...hope your not feeling poorly at all  Todays numbers are 11 and 25!

11. Vibrio Cholerae
Image
Vibrio cholerae is a bacterium some strains of which can cause the disease cholera. The bacteria infects the intestine and increases mucous production causing diarrhoea and vomiting which can result in extreme dehydration and, if not treated, death. It is usually transmitted through the faeces of an infected person, often by way of unclean drinking water or contaminated food, therefore it is more prevalent in third world countries where hand washing is less frequent and water is likely to be contaminated with sewage.
Filippo Pacini first discovered V. cholerae in Italy in 1854, Italians at that time believed that diseases like cholera came from "bad air" or the greek term "miasma." John Snow, a doctor known as the father of epidemiology, did a study during the London cholera epidemic of 1854 from which he concluded that cholera was not passed by bad air but by contaminated water, and discovered that a well that provided water to the public was collecting the leachings of a bacteria laden cesspit. Snow had the handle removed from a water pump that was found to be the neighbourhood's source of the contaminated water, and immediately the epidemic began to subside.

25. Dengue virus
Image
Dengue fever, A.K.A. breakbone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus that is transmitted to humans by several species of mosquito. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or sometomes into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs. Most people with dengue recover without any ongoing problems. The mortality rate is 1–5% without treatment, and less than 1% with adequate treatment; however severe disease carries a mortality rate of 26%. Dengue is endemic (naturally occurring) in more than 110 countries. It infects 50 to 100 million people worldwide a year, leading to half a million hospitalizations, and approximately 12,500–25,000 deaths.
