Righty ho....here we go....the first two picks for the game are....6 and 29!

6. Yersinia pestis
Image
The bacterium Yersinia pestis is responsible for the plague, a disease that has an extremely important place in human history. During the 6th century AD, the plague ravaged the known world over a 50 year period causing 100 million deaths. The "black death" again devastated Europe during the 14th century over a 5 year period causing 25 million deaths (25% of the European population). Plague is a disease that is primarily maintained among rodent populations and transmitted by infected fleas. Urban plague involves rats and has been the major source for human epidemics. Two distinct forms of plague occur in human populations:
Bubonic plague occurs within a week of being bitten by an infected flea. Multiplication of the bacteria produces the characteristic "bubo" (swollen, painful lymph node). Bacteremia follows (bacteria in the blood), causing death in about 75% of those affected.
Pneumonic plague occurs under crowded conditions when contaminated respiratory droplets expelled by infected persons are directly inhaled by another person. This form is characterized by a shorter incubation period and greater mortality (90%).

29. Shigella dysenteriae
Image
Shigella dysenteriae is a species of bacteria that causes severe diarrhoea (shigellosis), often referred to as "dysentery." It is most common in developing countries or areas where people live in close contact. Symptoms vary, but include cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, pain in the rectum and watery or bloody diarrhoea (often causing dehydration) within two days of infection. Most cases resolve within a week. Children younger than two years of age are most at risk, because they may develop seizures from the high fever associated with infection. Some diarrhoea may persist for weeks or months after infection. In severe cases, the bacteria can spread through the blood, causing a life-threatening infection. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, S. dysenteriae can cause haemolytic uremic syndrome, which causes severe anemia, haemorrhage, damage to the lining of the intestines and the kidneys (often causing kidney damage or kidney failure), and neurological disorders, such as stroke, paralysis and seizures. No vaccine is available so prevention efforts focus on basic hygiene and sanitation.....got to admit they are kinda pretty though!

I've got Yersinia Pestis, yay (I think???) 1/10

btw-a little girl contracted the Plague in the mid-west just this past summer (out camping with family & the 12 y/old found a dead squirrel, she asked "Mommy can I bury it" & Mommy said No. Little girl went back & wrapped dead animal in her sweat shirt....)

I was going to say YAY 1 for me except having number 29 doesn't seem like it deserves a YAY. I'm not even going to copy and paste the spelling of that one. Interesting info on both of them, but I'm with Tiffany. I hope those are the worst ones, but I'm afraid they aren't.

1 for me. :) Love the info, this kind of bingo is always interesting to me. While I'm aiming for zoology, I know I'll have to take a microbiology (survey) course at least once.

Yes I heard about that on the news.....does anyone know if the little girl recovered ok? I also heard there has been an outbreak of hantavirus too...which I think comes from mouse droppings :thinks: Personally I would say that viruses are way more scary than bacteria....after all most bacteria can be controlled with antibiotics whereas there aren't any treatments for viruses except vaccinations, so if you've get a virus all you can do is treat the symptoms.

Hopefully I'm not creeping too many people out with the info......remember it is very unlikely that you guys out there will ever be affected by most of these microbes. Also the general ratio of good to bad microbes is somewhere in the region of 85%:15% in favour of the good guys....so please don't have nightmares!!

None for me but I find it fascinating!!

Not so sure about thinking bacteria are better than virus' though, given the super bugs we have in our hospitals....both are pretty terrifying if we think about it...shudder...
