A quick question.

Post by ~threadbear~ »

I'm sorting out my next few projects, or trying to! :?

For the wedding sampler it says I need 14HPI 28 count evenweave. 13" x 13".

I was wondering whether I can use Aida and if so what sizes, or should I get on with the evenweave (EEK!) as that's what they used in the magazine. Although I haven't used it before myself.

Any advice please?

14# Aida = 28# evenweave - its just that on evenweave you go over 2.

I have never used evenweave (eyes not up to it) but I think you have to be careful where you start your cross. I'll look for a link

Here's the link - look at paragraphs 1 and 18

The whole page is worth a read - very educational

Thanks Mags.
I'll sit here now and have meself a shifty through it.

If Aida will be ok though, I might just stick with it, as at least I know what I'm doing with it. I dont want to mess this sampler up if I can help it.

You can convert fairly easily as mags said as long as you don't need lots of quarter stitches. It's just more difficult on aida.

You could give it a try though. Try a small corner and see how it works for you.

The only problem with doing on aida a pattern designed for evenweave is when you get fractional stitches as these are not so easy on aida - having said that I have done them.

Just went and looked at the pattern, it says it's only cross stitch and backstick, plus some french knots.
So hopefully it wont be a problem to use aida then?

It is a very simple and easy design. The 'challenge' for me is to not do their designs in the four boxes but to instead replace them with some other designs I saw.

I've book marked that page anyhow. Thanks!

I use aida cloth for about 60 percent of my patterns the other 40 percent is done with waste canvas. I have not had a problem working the fractional stitches you just have to go a bit slower and watch what you are doing.

Another good thing about evenweave is you can't see the holes so much, so the finished piece looks better if it has parts of the fabric which haven't been stitched.

What Becca said. The design probably calls for evenweave because the finish is finer. This may or may not be important on an heirloom project.

Also, there are evenweaves and evenweaves out there. Linen can be difficult to work with, but, for instance, lugana or quaker cloth is a dream to stitch on, and it's easy to see the holes because of the nature of the weave.

(Do you detect a lover of evenweaves here??)

So if i decided to give the lugana a try for instance, do I still get the same size? 13" x 13" as when i looked it up on the internet it said it was 25ct and the evenweave/aida for this chart was 28 or 14?

Sorry, I'm sure I'll get to grips with it all eventually, but these counts haven't registered with me yet!

T-bear, try this site:
http://www.findstitch.com/resources/linen.cgi/

I estimated that your sampler would be about 182 stitches by 182 stitches (i.e. 14 stitches to the inch times 13 inches) using the original 28 ct and added 2 inches all around for mounting. You would need a piece of aida about 17 x 17 at 14 (or 28ct evenweave). With 25ct lugana, you would need a piece 18"x18".

Check your design to find out the real stitch count and use the calculator to figure out how much fabric you would require.
