Re: Alphabet Buttons?

Post by Mrs Milkybar Kid »

I've stitched little motifs onto 28ct hand dyed fabric over 1 and used self-coveredbuttons to make my own buttons for cushions. If you were going to attach them to a trinket box you could just clip the shank off at the back. Here is a random tutorial to explain how to do it as I would just end up rambling! Usually when you buy self covering buttons there is a template to give you the size of the fabric you need to cover the buttons so you could use that as a guide as to how much space you have for each letter.

Sounds like a lovely idea and that purple thread is gorgeous - though DMC metallics are a nightmare to work with (IMHO) - I'm sure your bridesmades will treasure whatever you decide to make them!

There are loads of free alphabet charts if you google it. This is one of my favourite sites for finding various fonts and styles. http://www.freepatternsonline.com/xscha ... habets.htm" target="_blank Not sure whether they would work for you, but if you're stitching on very fine count fabric, then they should turn out small enough.

To chart the right size pattern, there is this very handy fabric calculator:
http://www.cyberstitchers.com/Stitching ... cessForm=0" target="_blank
On the pull-down menu at the top, choose ''calculate size of pattern'', input your measurements and voila!

Metallic threads can be tricky to work with as they often can split and unravel. There is a thread here all about them. Some brands are easier to work with than others - a lot of stitchers swap out DMC in favour of another brand (my personal favourite is Rainbow Gallery Petite Treasure Braid). Using Thread Heaven with metallics does help tame them a bit as well as knotting them to your needle. As you are planning on using them on a tiny piece of stitcing you will probably not notice - but if you have to use them a lot on a piece of stitching they can drive you crazy!

I'd definitely avoid DMC metallics, too. Real "pull your hair out" time.

I'll echo that -- go for Petite Treasure Braid (other purples available) or Kreinik #4 Braid (the former being the less expensive)

I've used self-cover buttons and have found that they are really fussy about the excess fabric -- you need to trim very close indeed, scary

But they are going to look SO good when you get them mounted, the stitching is lovely and what rich colours!
