Vinyl Weave vs. Perforated paper

Post by Ernie2jess »

:? i have a question and your comments would be much appreciated.
I'm hoping to take on the Valentine Framed card project on this website.. http://www.brookesbooks.com/CrossStitchFreebies.html . My question is...if it calls for perforated paper, could I use very flexible vinyl weave? If you download it and read through the instructions, it looks like it could work. My main concern is the little flower at the bottom. The middle of the flower is coned, and even though the weave is flexible, I don't know about the attaching it part. You see, I went to Michael's on my lunchbreak and I couldn't find any of the perforated paper. I know that Hobby Lobby carries it, but I didn't have enough time to stop by. My lunch break is my only free time to be able to do that. My husband and I are always together and it makes it hard to be able to do something for him. This will be stitched on my lunchbreak too.....

Well it looks very nice - I have never used either paper or vinyl so I'm not the best person to advise. However, I would have thought that paper might tear very easily when you pull the cone together and think it might be worthwhile trying with vinyl. As the centre is not ever so big I think I would try it first and if it doesn't work, how about a flat full circle centre to the flower ? Alternatively a smaller set of petals with a suitable button as the centre ?

Mags, that's a great idea!!! I also thought that it might be better trying vinyl weave because of the paper tearing. I'm too clumsy! I thought what I might do is go ahead and start the stitching of the flower, try to put it together and if it doesn't work, then somehow I'm going to have to go to Hobby Lobby to get the paper :?

Thanks Mags...you know...the other thing I'm worried about is the fact that it should be printed on photo paper, but wouldn't the frame and stuff be too heavy for just photo paper. I wonder if it would work on card stock?

I'm such a doof...I just noticed that the flower is just a brooch anyways. I really don't think my husband would wear it! Should I just stitch the frame and leave that area blank? Any suggestions?

Rose has experience of using perforated paper. I'm told it's more robust than you might imagine.

I think the frame would look fine if the little flower was simply stitched with the cone as a flat piece.

Printing the card shouldn't be a problem if you use heavier weight or specialist paper. Most computer printers can take quite thick card (heavier than 100gms, that is). It's also possible to buy single sheets of beautiful paper these days.

i think it would look great w/o the flower..it is for your husband..i don't think he'll be interested in the flower..lol

you can always go back later and just stitch the flower for yourself to wear!

i would only stitch the heart frame...print everything on cardstock..

that's just what i would do..and not saying i'm right..lol

I did all but 2 of the Christmas Cards I made this year on the perforated paper. I had used it for a couple very simple things before that and thought it would be interesting and also use up the leftover. It was easy to work with and also very sturdy. I had to frog a bit on 2 of the cards and there was no problem. I also used the vinyl weave on the Cow the difference that I noticed is the vinyl is a thicker materiel and so the piece looks a bit more fat. I liked both of the materials and had no problem with either of them.

Thanks everyone for your help. What I decided to do is to go ahead and stitch everything for this card and give it away as an extra in an exchange. Then, I'm going to kind of design one myself as a heart frame and stitch that one for my husband. I'll make it a little more manly.

I stitched a heart design for my DH a couple of years ago - it's in my gallery. I don't know how manly it is, but he said he liked it! The charms on it made it different, I thought.
