Thank you for your kind comments. The threads are all DMC, the main motifs are a variegated one (# not on it now) and 224 and 353. As I didn't have beads with me, the centre is a full cross in DMC mettalic E130

Lovely colours Sally, very sunny and warm which is welcome here in January! Was the variegated thread DMC as well? If so I'd guess it may be Variations 4160.

Mabel - Yes it was DMC as are all the threads this time round. I suspect that Miss Sasha found the number bit and had a play and it could be anywhere now. :D

PS a few days later a friend "needed" to go to Spotlight to get some knitting needles and the DMC threads were just right there, so of course I got loose and bought another bundle of variegated perle 5 - of course. Love playing with colours.

They are such good value for adding a bit of variegated colour to projects when you don't quite want to splash out on hand-dyeds - and colour-fast too! So of course you couldn't resist that wonderful opportunity :-)

I agree there. I love the #5 pearl threads from DMC and Anchor. Threadworxs are great too. :D

My fabric and threads have now arrived. A fat quarter means that I'll either need more fabric or might use another 25ct fabric in my stash as well as the Dresden Blue (Chromatic Alchemy's "Amaranthine" for instance. (Not a shabby alternative!) I ordered two Caron Snow threads, which I've never used before, in case they come in handy (as you do): white and shadow. More silver...! :P

Amaranthine is gorgeous and would look great stitched in the very very light blue of Moonglow! Caron Snow is a wonderful thread to use as an alternative to perle #5 - the wings of the dragonfly in Resurrection are stitched in white and grey Snow and although it's hard to make it show up in pictures they have a lovely shimmery look in real life.

Love the subtle colour change in the white.

A quilting friend took me with her to 2 (!!!) quilt shops which also had cross stitch and lots of threads.

A Cottage Threads ?8 (or maybe 12 perle) Katies Blush
3 EdMar - 2 are ?#8 perle verigated (1 pinks the other pale teal and soft fawn)
1 is a spft [ink variegated Boucle.
3 Gumnut Threads 273 273 197 mauves/pink

Threadworx 1116 muted variegated green/blue/brown.

Too cloudy today so dark inside and too windy outside to take pics so will do it later.

Image

OK Here they all are - my recent additions to the already overflowing boxes of threads.

On the right are the DMC (mostly variegated) variegated dmc threads from earlier in my stay here, the left is what I bought today.

I love Threadworx...I'm collecting those in #5 &#8
The cottage threads and Gumnut I've never heard of but Oh! I shall add those to my 'Lust List'

I've been tempted by Amaranthine too, so pretty! I like the Caron Snow effect threads too! :D

Gumnut silks are beautiful to work with, and come in lovely colours (in "families" of five shades of a colour), but they're not easy to get in the UK - and very expensive when you do find them! They come in various types, like stranded cotton, and a sort of perle #8, and a wool mix, and they used to do subtly variegated colours too but they have been discontinued unfortunately although you can sometimes pick up leftover stock. Have a look here for some droolworthy pictures.

I used some of their stranded silks for Bittersweet - you may be able to see from the picture that even the "solid" colours have some lovely shading to them.

Mabel, will I be thrown out if I start this design from the inside and work out? I think the straight sides of the whipped backstitch begins at 38 from the centre, but until I know that for a fact, I'm always nervous... :thinks: :wip: Don't want to encourage any of our green "friends". ( :ribbit: )

Serinde, you can work it any which way you like :-) - I give suggestions, but you know as well as anyone that needlework designs can rarely be done in Only One Way.

By the way, the second January post is now up!

Mabel - Definitely yummy threads those Gumnut silks are and I would like to get more of them. I must recheck with my friend Christine as to the name of the shop we went into yesterday so I know where to find them. I see also that my favourite shop in Brisbane has them too - very bad for the budget though.

Serinde - I just found the centre of the fabric and started with the central motif and worked out as I find that the easiest. :D
