Mabel, the blankets are gorgeous. I'm thinking that in future I'll learn how to knit properly (I can do squares!) and crochet, but just for now I'm concentrating on cross-stitching and letting my mother in law concentrate on everything else! I'm sure I'll get her to teach me in time!

Hi Mabel, love your blankets and the edges are very effective. Have you ever tried what i know as the CRAB STITCH? If you do a single crochet going backwards into each stitch it comes out like a picot stitch.

Hi redrose,
I've heard of that stitch (I think Rose mentioned it as well -- didn't you call it a reverse crochet, Rose?), but I've never tried it yet; I'll keep it in mind for the next blanket! By the way, in Dutch it's called "lobster stitch"; not quite sure why we prefer a different shellfish :-)

yes, it's called that, reverse stitch, or crab stitch. You literallt twist the crochet hook from left to right (if i remember correctly!), it's a sort of backward kind of single crochet.
I've started a doily the other night, in a sort of pumpkin/orange colour. it's been ages since I've crocheted a doily....

BTW, has anyone tried Annies Attic? Not only do they put up a daily freebie, they also have a library of stitches. maybe you could look there for tips and hints, for crochet. Good luck!
