Glad you like the WIP. :D I'm getting very tired of gold in the initial, and may start working on the sampler again before yarn fatigue sets in.

They are alike but not identical stitches. See here for an example. Scroll down this page from the astonishing stitchers within the Society for Creative Anachronism to understand how return trips are organised. As you can see, it doesn't seem to be an issue as to whether the long arm goes up-and-across or down-and-across as long as the stitch is consistent.

Thanks for the links Serinde -- it's cleared one thing up for me, that several very similar (if not identical) stitches can go by lots of different names!

Here is a new update for you. As you can see, I've started two large motifs in hopes that they actually fit where they are meant to go... I could have put the violet and the snails slightly further to the left. Oh, well! The snails, I should say, are in Mabel's honour: she had a look at an earlier version of the sampler design in which there were slugs. However, they had to go. Now, I've been able to reinstate them, along with some peapods. They are stitched in a sort of pinky fawn colour, and their shells are much easier to see (stitched with two threads iin the needle, a kind of cinnamon and a brown). If I find myself with time, I might restitch them with this pink plus a lighter brown, to underline their whole mucousy snailiness... :smelly:

or their snaily mucosity :-)? Thanks for reinstating the snails, they are gorgeous and i love them. Also inspired to have the gastropods near the peapods...

Seriously, it is looking so beautiful! If your pieces do not become the stars of the exhibition, there is no justice in the world.

Really wonderful and such great colours. Just love the expressions on the faces of the sun and moon - wonder what they are talking about. Perhaps the sun is amazed that the moon dared to appear whilst he was still in the sky???

I wish you could come along as well. Just a small matter of a trip to Edinburgh during Festival time! It is an open exhibition, and anyone can come along, just in case any of the Scottish contingent are in the capital.
