Scary moment - because of the construction of the box the fabric had to be cut exactly to size

I've taken a bit of time to finish a design that's been lying around for over two years - it's another pair to add to Floral Lace (which so far consists of 9 pairs of floral designs), on the theme of Remembrance. That one of them was going to be a (stylised) poppy was clear to me from the start; for the other I decided on Rosemary, which is also linked with remembrance.

Started stitching the poppy version yesterday, this is what I've got so far:

Lovely!

I didn't know Rosemary was linked with Remembrance, what's the history there?

I think it's a quotation from Shakespeare, after Ophelia's death Hamlet talks of the flowers he will scatter on her grave (may have several details wrong here!) and mentions "Rosemary, that's for remembrance".

Yes, Mabel, you are correct. Rosemary has been associated with death and remembrance since at least Roman times, so I presume the Greeks also followed this symbolism even earlier. Apparently scientists are now finding that something in rosemary does actually stimulate memory in the brain, so there you go. :thinks:

Finished all the surface stitching and beading - now just the cutting and filling to do, and then on to Rosemary!

Looks really nice. Simple, restrained & dignified. Very, very appropriate.

Just one silly thing occurs to me. While most real poppies have 4 or more petals, the remembrance poppies seem to have been stylised into only 2 petals.

Regards,

Richard.

You're absolutely right Richard, and I don't like them :-) - poppies don't have two petals only unless someone picked them off! Fortunately the Royal British Legion's poppy shop also has a few commemorative poppies (in various forms, among which a brooch and an umbrella) with more petals, and the ones made for the Tower of London's moat certainly had more than two, so I felt it was a valid option.

Poppy is finished  ! The filling stitch is nutmeg stitch in green and red; Rosemary will use mace stitch in green and blue.
