Well, yes, in a manner of speaking. It's all nepotism, in true early modern fashion. For the last, oh, 25 years, the "principle investigator" for the exhibition and I have been pals (we were in different academic departments; she's a professor now: bow, scrape), and she's seen a lot of my work over the years. The invitation came about from my own careless words. I idly wondered if the university would mind (eg copyright issues) if I charted and stitched some of the wonderful kritters found in the margins of the Wode Psalter, which will be the centrepiece of the exhibition... things like little snail-men and beasts that look remarkably like amiable dinosaurs. Well, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was charting the blackwork. And then, well, I think I might have volunteered for the rest of it. That defective right hand, again.

Did I say all these have to be finished by the end of June? (Plus my other editing work... two books in progress due... end of June) Sleep? Ha! I laugh in the face of sleep!

Beautiful work Serinde. All the pieces are equally interesting( I also have a strong Scottish heritage) but I love the letter O. May your fingers and eyes have the stamina for this wonderful task :D

Re: Serinde's exhibition pieces UPDATE 1 March

An update for you all.

Image

And here is a close-up of Mr Moon. Sorry about the focus  , but it's to show what a fun stitch long-armed cross stitch can be. Looks like he has a knitted woolly hat on! The trick is to go right to left and then left to right and never get confused when you start another thread. Very tactile, too.

Image

Last is the Capital O. Now with added star and frilly surround, which is a very dark burgundy colour. I think the flower shape around the star is meant to be something like a hollyhock, and will be filled in using other purply shades.

I thought so! Also, long-armed cross stitch works up very quickly and covers really, really well.

I so connect with Mr Sun's expression, too...

The moon is excellent! Do you have an illustrationof long-armed cross stitch? Is it like heringbone stitch?

Only just noticed that the sun is looking rather glum -- do you think he envies the moon his woolly hat :-)?
