This is more like a small than a mini...finished size is just under 5x7 inches and it was my first time working with beads. I chose to use black floss to attach all of them rather than matching the bead color.
ETA: there are some black beads in the faces but they didn't photograph well.

This is cute -- and you can see the beads once you know they're there. 
I always attach beads matching the colour of the fabric, so it looks great to me.
