Recently I got a wonderful book about needlepainting pollinating insects and flowers, and it has a section with exercises to get you into needlepainting. I had a few fabrics I wanted to try out, as well as some silks, so I'm going to have a go. Here is the first exercise in the book, with my set-up:

A close-up (rotten colours as I photographed it at night by lamp light) to show the texture of the thread - you can see the individual silk filaments at some points:

And a daylight pic with my progress so far beside a standard match to give an idea of the scale. The silk is very very fine  and the stitching is not quick. Trying to split something that fine takes concentration :-)

Really tiny stitching. Didn't realize at first that was a matchstick. Is it the size that makes needlepointing different than other embroidery? I think I'll have to do a google search.

needlepAinting rather than needlepOinting, but yes it's generally on a slightly smaller scale than other embroidery (although you could do an enormous needlepainted picture, it would just take you ages :-) )
This uses a fine silk which is about half the thickness of a strand of DMC, but I have also done some at an RSN workshop which used DMC (1 strand) so that went a bit quicker.

Thank you for the info. And thank "autocorrect" for needlepointing instead of needlepainting. (Almost did it to me again :tantrum: )
