(The Icelandic Viking Parliament. I visited Thingvellir (pronounced Thing-gwed-lir) in Iceland where the parliament was held and was confused for a while. I was expecting a parliamentary building, not initially realising the canyon was the parliament. The speaker spoke on one side, and the listeners stood on the other. In the robust Viking politics of the 10th century this was needed so the speaker had enough time to escape with their life if people disagreed with them. The parliament gorge is below:)

Haven't the sides of the gorge moved over the centuries -- I think they were a bit closer together, but I'm probably wrong.

(Serinde, I think you are correct. Parts of the mid Atlantic ridge are separating at a rate of 2cm a year. I can't find figures for Iceland, though looking at maps suggests that at the northern end of the ridge it's a good bit less. If it's half that rate, then the gorge width will have increased by 10metres or 33ft since Viking times, so it would have been about 2/3 the current width.)
