So here is the promised update.
I've mostly worked on the border during my recent burst of stitching.

this is a close-up of the border. I hoped it would show the blending filament and "tweeding" but I'm not sure it does.

Looks lovely, and should be really spectacular when finished.

I can't see that the colours are blended, which is just the way it should be, as it means that the blends are working. Blending just adds to the range of available colours, and if it's sensibly managed with blends that are appropriate & will work at more than 4-5" away, you can increase the current DMC palette of 446 colours by around 11000. There are theoretically 99235 different blends (445 + 443 + 442 + ... + 2 + 1), but if the colour difference between the threads is too large, the blend can break down.

Regards,

Richard

TW patterns are too complicated for me, although I absolutely love the interesting way she uses colour and texture.

Richard, that's exactly right. It's a lesson I learned doing Hardanger -- using variegated threads meant sticking to the ones with the most more subtle changes. But I'll tell you what: colour blending in weaving is Very Exciting!

You're right. Must be amazing to weave pictures with it.
As for general fabric using blending/tweeding, well you can't get a better example than 'Tweed' which often has a startling disparity between thread colours when you look closely. Not that I have ever owned any, or even seen any in the last 20 years for that matter; Having kids has had a catastrophic effect on our window shopping habits - 'John Lewis' was replaced with 'Poundland', and actual shopping went on in places that aspired to 'Poundland' prices.

Regards,

Richard.

True, Richard. True tweed fabric has the most extraordinary set of colours worked in, and it would seem that the possibilities are almost endless, given the different patterns. What's really exciting at the moment is the number of young up-and-at-em types who have decided that they can't see why something can't be done. Like planning to set up the only tartan weaving shed the Highlands has seen for ages (I kid you not; that sort of thing is done in the islands  ).

Anyway, enough hijacking! TW uses blends very skilfully. Lots of metallics, too, if memory serves.
