[quote="kingfisher68" Laverne is an unusual name, not heard it before. :)[/quote]

Kind of a long story as to how she got her name. But since we're in the S & G, I will be glad to sit for a while have a vanilla latte and a fresh, hot cinnamon bun and treat you to whatever you want. I will try to shorten it. When I met my husband I had two cats. He had a son who is incredibly phobic about cats and dogs. David lived with his Dad and for all sorts of reasons (not my cats!) moved in with his mom before we got married. David is Down's Syndrome and the most loving and caring person I know, but very very phobic. When my cats died ( one at 16 and one at 18), David told me that it was okay for us to get kittens (when he visits I put the cats in the bedroom, close the door and put a gate in front of the door, in case they open the door and get out) because he knew how much I love cats. But he wanted to name them. So when we got these two little kittens who were sisters he named them Laverne and Shirley. That was an old tv comedy that David loved and those were the names of the main two characters. That was nearly 17 years ago. I am very close to David (call my step children my children and their children are my grands) and talk to him at least twice a day and see him at least once a week or more. He always asks about Laverne (I lost Shirley about a year and a half ago) as he "loves her from a distance" as he puts it.

Like I said a long story but I think a loving story in a strange way, thought I'd share it. Don't know if I ever did before (probably more than once, actually) but since Laverne is sitting on my lap and using my arm as a pillow, seemed like the time to tell it. Especially since we don't go to "that place" today. Tuesdays and Fridays.

I think I have read that, or a version of that before. Doesn't hurt to re tell though as I think it's a great story. I've read that Downs Syndrome people have odd, to us, preferences but David sounds to be a really sensitive boy.

Thanks for the full version....and that cinnamon bun. I had mine with a strong expresso. :D

Carole, thank you so much for telling that wonderful story. Brought tears to my eyes as it is so touching & I am very pleased you have such a strong relationship with David. I have known several Downs Syndrome people in my life & they are usually very affectionate & from what I gather often enjoy music. How lovely you speak to David throughout the day & he visits often. What a unique relationship that is & one you must truly treasure, I know I would :)

Sorry you lost Shirley as it takes quite a while to adapt when losing a pet but glad you still have Laverne.

I enjoyed your company & needless to say, the coffee & cinnamon bun. Thank you. :)

It's a lovely story that can stand a lot of re-telling! And I too enjoy a fresh cinnamon bun :-)

I will grab a corner chair and take a hazelnut steamer. Because lord knows, if I attempt another French Knot tonight and I have to cut another knot out again (for the 3rd time) I might scream.

*pats Curious Kitty's back in a comforting and supportive fashion* beads :-) ?

By the way, what's a hazelnut steamer? (I'm guessing it's not like a chestnut roaster...)

Basically just steamed milk and hazelnut syrup. I don't drink coffee so when I got my first job as a barista, I started off with only caramel spiced ciders until my coworker then told me to try it. Now it's my standard- Christmas time when eggnog comes in I have steamed eggnog with chai syrup. It's fabulous.

And no, regular french knots. For some reason the knots kept going through the hole and/or wouldn't tighten correctly. I had to cut entire lengths out and de-knot it so I didn't disturb the rest of the letter. =( I'm on the final section of M - back stitching and french knotting.

Thanks for the explanation, sounds rather good and just the thing for winter!

As for the beads, I meant you might like to substitute them for those troublesome knots :-)

I'm halfway on the alphabet, I think it might look odd substituting beads in from N and onwards, but I love that idea!

Feel better soon. And it's okay to curl up on one of the comfy lounges with a cozy throw and take a nap too. Just wave your hand and refills of your drink will appear.

Richard, we will tiptoe past Mabel and go through these soundproofed doors.

*clunk* Now, see that pile of old dishes? See that wall? And no need for tidying up afterwards -- all part of the service. You can come here anytime you like it for as long as you like. We never seem to run out of old china; don't know why. Anyway. When you feel a bit better, no matter how temporarily, come back through to the S&G, and have whatever is your equivalent to tea and toast. :anotherfrog:

No need to break anything. The 'Tea & Toast' sounds good, though. I have, next to me as I type, a mug of real tea. The sort where the spoon almost stands up on its own because the tea is so strong.
:tea:
Ahh. That's nice.

Regards,

Richard.

I'm delighted to say there is another, slightly happier, reason for celebration today! Younger Son has a real, permanent job! :whoop: :whoop: :whoop: We are so pleased for him -- he'll never be rich, but he's doing absolutely what he should be -- working with the Scottish Society for the Protection of Animals (SSPCA). Best of all, he'll be "over West" -- well almost. He's going to the Glasgow rehoming and rescue centre. So happy for him! :toast: :horse: :alex: :kitty: :puppy: :bunny: :chicken:

:toast: Congratulations to younger son! Having the right job, one that you look forward to each day, is sooooo important. I've had both types and I don't think there was enough money in the world to pay me to stay in the wrong one (I only lasted 6 weeks before I quit.) Good luck to him. And sounds like he isn't going to be too far away??
