My first ribbon

Post by fccs »

I entered Pumpkin Swirl in the Larimer County Fair and after work today I went to the fair to see how I did. It's a second place (which I think is actually third, because I think it goes first, reserve, and second). Regardless, I'll take it. I've never entered anything before and didn't know what to expect. It'll be interesting to read what's on the judging paper attached to the piece. Maybe it'll give me some good tips for next year. It did seem the winners were primarily either country themed or samplers. Hmm....thinking what I can stitch in those categories. :-)

:whoop: :mexicanwave: congratulations Debby and well deserved 2nd .:mexicanwave: :mexicanwave:

A lot of judging often depends on the judges preferences so don't sell yourself short. A friend in the UK who often judges handwork said that it was a pitfall she was always aware of and tried to judge solely on merit and stitching criteria. :D

Congratulations on your recognition. It is nice to see that other people agree with us that your stitching skill is great.

However, I'd utter one small word of caution. For future stuff, do it for your enjoyment. Don't pick the subject just to appeal to judges as it'll reduce your fun doing the stitching if you are doing a design that you are less keen on. Ultimately it's your enjoyment that is more important than the recognition of anybody else.

Regards,

Richard.

Well done! It's a beautiful piece - I love the way the background fabric gently echoes the thread colours, too.

Richard, thanks for the advice. I promise that if I do decide to stitch something closer to what they seem to like, it will be something I love. (Sometimes I talk big, but end up doing what I want.) I actually have a couple in my to-do list...once I can get to it. Christmas stocking first...

Aw, thanks! And I just looked at the list of winners - second is really second, so I stand corrected in thinking it was third. :-)

Congratulations!! We have non-needleworkers judging ours I think and we never get an explanation of the scores. That would be nice.

I picked up Pumpkin Swirl from the fair today. The judge's sheet was attached and I received full points in each category, so ended with 100%. I guess the reason I got second is that I did not get any of the five additional points which are based on difficulty and intricacy of the design. But that's okay - I'm pretty pleased. (And I'm leaving the ribbon hanging on the framed piece for awhile.)

I take my hat off to you. As for not getting complexity points - that must be a very subjective opinion.

Once you take the ribbon off the front, attach it to the back. It's part of the piece's history. I do the same with the chart I used too, so at some point in the future someone with enough interest can go through the chart and see the dates I started each page etc. . I know I find that sort of thing fascinating & maybe in a century or two(!) someone else will too.

Regards,

Richard.
