Corey's woodworking- *updated March,4,2016 Big News!!*
Well I haven't been stitching since it's gotten nice outside. But I figured I'd keep everyone updated on what I've been up to. Here is my first table that I've ever made. Just wanted to make something quick for the balcony. It measures 2 feet high by 1 foot wide by 1 foot deep. Poplar for the legs, oak for everything else, sanded to 240, and finished with stain and polyurethane.

Re: Corey's woodworking- starting with a table
Very nice! I could never make a table...at least not one that had even proportions and would stand.

Great to see you posting Corey and what a little beauty that table is. Love the grain and patterns in the table top. Its good and sturdy and won't get blown over easily either. Well Done.

Re: Corey's woodworking- starting with a table
That is nice. The only improvement I could think of (and it is a 'luxury' type idea) is to put a bit of mitred beading all round the table edge to avoid the risk of tearing out splinters from the end grain and act as a bump strip.
I have done similar things for the garden with pallet timber, and with some of the smaller pallets, screwed the legs to the pallet blocks, fully planked the top and then braced with further planks, as below:
I did a number of these, and the whole family was able to stand each one, so meeting my criteria for 'almost adequate strength', and given that they cost nothing, it's never worth wood preserving them as the preserver costs more than making another. Certainly didn't look as good as yours, Corey.
Regards,
Richard.

Great table, well done as it looks really lovely. I love the smell of wood but would be hopeless at making something like that. Very well done

Re: Corey's woodworking- starting with a table
Just going to sneak in here and let you know what I've been up to. We bought a two floor condo in September. Busy setting that up. Slowly picking up my stitching again. I've converted the 6 ft by 6 ft storage closet into my personal "shop".
I started out with the bench. Got it for about 75% off. 6 ft bench. Then onto of it is my lathe and a makeshift drill press that I found. Kind of like a portable one and you attach a cordles drill to the top.
And I've been making a couple pens lately. Getting started on Christmas gifts. Some people are getting pens. The first two pics are of this wood called Paduk. The 3rd and 4th pics are of a pen I just made yesterday, and it's cherry and maple.

Re: Corey's woodworking- *updated Nov.30th,2015*
Brilliant.
I am so envious of you. I make quite a lot of pens, but none are wooden. I just cannot cope with the manual dexterity required when using a wood lathe, and my metalworking lathe isn't suitable for wood as it spins too slowly.
The Cigar Pens you have made look great. If you sell them to colleagues to make a few pennies, make sure you price your work in as well. The gold plating seems to last 3 years or so for most people in regular use. The Berea pen kits with 'Upgrade Gold' last better, but cost more and it's difficult to persuade people to pay more with no initial visible difference. The chrome plating seems to last better than the standard gold, and I've got colleagues with 6 yo pens that still look fresh with their chrome plating.
If you ever go to acrylic blanks, remember that with many of the blanks they are fairly transparent & you may have to paint the brass tubes a matching colour to prevent the gold showing through (unless it's a colour that benefits from a gold background, of course). I have finally found a use for the modelling paints I bought as a child for things like Revel and Monogram aeroplane kits - amazingly the last time I painted a kit was 30 years ago.. Doesn't time fly?
Anyway, keep up the good work, you have done superbly on those.
Regards,
Richard.

Re: Corey's woodworking- *updated Nov.30th,2015*
Well I've been quite busy lately. Been working a lot on my lathe. Starting to experiment building other things as well.
The most exciting news though is that I'm going to start a YouTube channel for people like me who have a passion but don't have a garage. I'm going to show how I make it work with my 6 ft by 8 ft space and keep the noise to a minimum. As well as the only thing that's stopping people is their imagination. Lots of ideas planned. It's going to be called Woodventures and I'm planning on uploading the first video in about two to three weeks.

Well done Corey they are beautiful pens & those given as gifts will be much appreciated I am sure. I look forward to seeing your video on YouTube. The woods you have chosen are beautiful but have to admit I like the cherry & Maple best of all. Good luck with your new venture & please keep us up to date with how things are going .
