Even More totally OT!!!

Post by wendywombat »

Now I know we live in a farming area but I do think that our neighbour's choice of new vehicle is Just a Wee Bit OTT!  It's bigger than his House!

This was what we woke to find parked on our neighbours grass at the week-end!

It was later used to harvest the ripe crops.

Wow that's big  Thank goodness it's his crop harvester rather than new car. Just imagine trying to park that at the shops

and my neigbors get worried if someone parks a big truck in the driveway. I am pretty sure that harvester wouldn't fit in a driveway. I'm not sure it could get down my street.

The crop was sugar beet. They grow the plant here for seed then harvest to grow the sugar beet in the north of France where it's a bit cooler. What was amazing was when they planted out the field earlier in the year...all by hand!! and it's a HUGE field

All that's left on the fields margins now are SUNFLOWERS. They'll be there for a while yet...they are already hanging their heads and ripening.

Luckily the Combine was only in the garden overnight...

But it was funny to see it there!! It was the biggest I've seen in the area!

Wow! Fantastic! It's humbling to see the effort that goes into planting the food we buy at the shops and eat: whether it's planting by hand (my veg patch is bad enough!) or harvesting using the latest equipment. I suspect we don't give our "daily bread" enough thought! :thinks:

That brings back memories of growing up in Montana. There would be 4 to 5 of those per field when harvest time came around Take a week to get the grain in. The ones we used were either red or grey though never had any yellow ones. Isn't it pretty.

My college roommate's family grew sugar beets and sunflowers on their farm. North Dakota is sugar beet and potato fields for miles and miles. I always hated the day they started processing beets- the air is bitter not sweet like you would think.

I'd never seen a Yellow one either!

Rose, I've seen films of Gangs of Combines working in the US! Our fields are small in comparison! But it's still big by UK standards!

I'm glad they don't process the sugar beet here either. I remember visiting East Anglia in the UK and the roads were smelly and sticky with the stuff! :gurn:

I remember seeing a bunch of those and other large farm vehicles driving down the road when I lived out in a rather rural area. we lived right off the main road that they would travel down to get to the farms that were further out from us and we would see them all the time. I hated getting stuck behind them in areas where there was no space for them to pull off the road to let traffic through.

Well, you know men, the bigger it is, the better they like it.

We get those machines out on the road about end of September to cut the maize, in fact I think the ones here are bigger and a right pain to overtake, as they take up nearly all the road
